We finally managed to get a date in the diary to book Sunday lunch on 27 August which we were very much looking forward to.Firstly, the staff are lovely, warm and welcoming. However, the meal was unfortunately extremely disappointing. Our starters were quite nice, I had the pea hummus, it was nice, but the flavour would have been enhanced if served at an ambient temperature and not straight from a cold fridge. My partner had the broccoli with burrata, he enjoyed this.I had roast beef for main course, despite it being advertised as “medium rare” I can confirm it was far from that. I would also add that the wording of “greens” is overstated as there was only a small portion of green cabbage. You'd need to order more vegetables from the menu.My partner chose chicken, at a price of £17.50 it would be only reasonable to assume the chicken would be a breast and not a chicken leg (I would also add the chicken leg was dry). The stuffing was also missed off the meal, however, this was rectified and at that time. We did comment that if the chicken is just a leg, the menu should specifically say that (had my partner known this at the time, either by reading it in the menu or being told at the time of ordering, he would not have chosen it)We would have considered a dessert or cheese, but unfortunately although we sat there for 15/20 minutes we were not offered, so we decided to pay and leave.I would finally add that I looked up the Sunday lunch menu (before booking) and both the description and more importantly, the prices need to be updated.I'm disappointed and sorry not to be able to give better feedback. I did email Butcombe directly after our visit, but have not received any reply.

Myself and my partner drove from Salisbury to have a Sunday lunch at the King John.Car park was full so parked down in the village lay-by.After being pointed to our seats, we waited 15 minutes to be served and drinks to come. A further 40 mins for Sunday roast to arrive, the roast which was so poor it was almost laughable. Potatoes not crispy, veg uncooked and hard to cut, gravy - bland. If your going to charge £20 at least cook vegetables correctlyI had to get up to and go the bar for another drink.Staff not attentive at all, never checked on.Pub is in a great location, with a great tiered garden but that seems to be the end of its qualities.Shame

Really enjoyed it, in a fantastic location and the King John Room was definitely worth the extra - lovely staff for drinks and an excellent dinner. An all round excellent review from us. (If I had anything as a tiny negative to say, perhaps certain members of the kitchen staff shouldn’t be pumping out hardcore American gangster rap music from the kitchen in to the car park - it’s perhaps not quite in keeping with a rural Wiltshire village setting).

Had an excellent roast dinner here. The best I've had out for a long time. The service delivery was outstanding and very accommodating to my mother's disability. Dog friendly and very cozy with the fire. Clean and comfortable surroundings.

19 of us enjoyed a wonderful lunch yesterday. A big thank you to Kate and Sarah and the team. The menu was just ideal for us as you offered smaller portion for some of us oldies! A delightful location and we will be back when we are next in the area. Thank you once again - Judi, Somerton u3a

We have eaten at the King John a few times now and always found them to have an interestingly varied menu available.Tonight we enjoyed Vennison faggots with mashed swede and greens and Hanger and Sirloin steaks. All perfectly cooked and fully flavoursome. The service was excellent, fast efficient and friendly. We particularly appreciated Zac’s helpful explanations of the meals available. We had a great time and will definitely recommend to friends and come again ourselves .

A great country pub. Staff are lovely and a really good menu. Menu just right, not too many choice so you know it's going to cooked fresh. Can highly recommend then faggots and mash. Going to try the fish and chips next time. The people on our next table had it and it looked amazing. Great selection of beers from a great brewery. Can highly recommend.

I had lunch here on 26/10/23 with a group of friends having pre booked a large group all having different dishes . The food was excellent and clearly freshly cooked to order so don’t expect instant service ( which was excellent ). The array of choices on the menu was good although I would suggest more choice for vegans or those with food intolerance? Having said that they were more than happy to “ tweak “ the dish I chose . Would highly recommend this pub to anyone , but don’t expect cheap , fast food ! It’s far better than that !
