Darroch Learg Hotel & Restaurant - Ballater, Royal Deeside | Darroch Learg is a small, independent hotel and restaurant located in the village of Ballater in the Cairngorms National Park. We have ten individually decorated bedrooms, comfortable sitting rooms. In our restaurant the menu changes daily and with the season. The Franks family has welcomed guests here for over sixty years with our own style of refined, yet relaxed Highland hospitality.

Darroch Learg Hotel & Restaurant
Nestled among the tree just outside of Ballater Village resides this most charming of hotels. We had booked dinner there last night and we were not to be disappointed - quite the opposite.The charming hosts, Fiona and Nigel showed us our table which was beautifully prepared for dinner with fresh linen and we were invited to sit by the window on very comfortable chairs. The menu was reassuringly short - something for everyone and each very tempting. My wife had the seafood bisque which was absolutely superb. My smoked trout was a delightful starter - especially with the white French wine to accompany it (picture of the trout attached). My wife followed with sea bass on a risotto base - delicious - while I chose the full-flavoured highland beef.Everything was served with true elegance, befitting of the establishment. Without question, we will return to eat here again and probably stay over judging by previous comments. Thank you to the hosts who made us feel most welcomed!

This is just for dinner at the restaurant in early August; we did not stay there. It is too bad that Google does not give separate review options for hotels with good restaurants. The restaurant was really great. Food was excellent. The setting, in a glass-enclosed room, was very nice. Service was good.

Elegant dining experience with many courses to mix and match. Filet steak was not as tender as I'm used to in North America but very full of flavor and delicious. Trout, bisque, and salmon were stand out options. As well as desert.

Fine dining at its best! Lovely evening from start to end. Relaxed welcome, drinks in the lounge while we looked at the Menu. Four courses £55, not a massive choice of dishes, which didn't worry us, but may be worth checking options when booking? Attentive service but with no interruptions whilst eating! Wine a little pricey, but good selection. Superb food throughout with good size portions, I would have preferred some seasonal vegetables as opposed to the side salad but it didn't distract from an excellent meal. Will definitely be back.

Great place, very kind and efficient staff. We stayed in a room facing the highlands hills : fantastic sunset ! A little expensive but for one night in the highlands, worth it ! Thanks a lot for a (surely) great souvenir.

What a great spot! Hotel room was very pleasant, bright, clean and homely feeling and dinner was delicious. There is a tasting menu with some subs available. It wasn't very clear what is the sub for what similarly with breakfast menu which was confusing for other tables too and it seemed like the staff were not entirely sure themselves however they kindly gave us everything we asked for. Especially memorable for us was the truffled mac n cheese starter, fish soup and homemade lemon flavoured bread (which they kept coming! - hungry bf into happy bf). I loved the dining room with glass all around and above and fantastic views out. Also our tea pots came with these super cute covers so we wouldn't burn ourselves. Service was indeed beyond expectation during whole our stay. Many thanks and hope to visit you again

What an amazing hotel. A hidden gem. We celebrated my friends birthday, and stayed for one night at the weekend, during our visit from London. The food was amazing, rooms clean and cosy. So beautifully decorated throughtout. The staff were welcoming. Would definately recommend and will be visiting again.

The restaurant located within Darroch Learg Hotel. Upscale restaurant with excellent staff. Nice setting good view. The order was The Filete, Trout, salmon, This place is a most visit. By far the best dinner we had in Scotland. The steak is perfectly cooked, tender and moist. The Chips(Fries) were amazing. There was nothing to complain about. From the setting, staff to the food. everything was executed to perfection. Cannot stress enough how good the steak was. I have eaten A5 Wagyu and this restaurants steak was up to that level. Finally Desert the creme brulee was amazing made with Tahitian vanilla. You can even spot the vanilla specks from the pod. By far the best Restaurant we had visit so far.

Absolutely the best! Fiona and Nigel have curated a fantastic home that is not only wonderful to stay in, but a dining experience like none other. Across 2 nights we ate some of the best steaks I have ever had in my life. All in this little home.You HAVE to eat here. While you're at it, enjoy their kickass bar with a wonderful selection of beers and spirits. Stay here too. Forever.

A wonderful hidden gem at the gateway to The Highlands. Beautiful rooms, engaged and efficient owners who could not have been more pleasant. Excellent staff and wonderful food - what else is there?! Highly recommend Darroch Learg
