Tarmac driveway transformed!Oliver was involved in extensive work on our tarmac driveway in October and November 2021.Before work started, he gave us a free quotation, inspected the site and determined what was needed to rectify the many problems.The 40-year old driveway was poor quality by today’s standards. Only one layer of tarmac had been laid directly on top of a thin, inadequate hardcore base. It was never adequately rolled or levelled and instead of lateral binding there was just a line of loose edging stones placed directly on soil. Since the driveway was originally laid, little maintenance had been done. The profile (particularly the lateral profile) had many peaks and troughs far in excess of the BSI 25mm limit. The old surface was completely inadequate as a base for any new base and tarmac layers. There were many breaks, holes and cracks visible, patches of vegetation were growing through the tarmac, the top layer was widely de-laminated, and the edges of the driveway were crumbling because of the absence of effective lateral binding.Oliver took comprehensive measurements and used the information to provide an estimate for the work which proved to be very accurate.The driveway is approximately 40 metres long and is on a significant incline. The old defective base layers were removed and replaced with compacted hardcore before the final layers of top dressing were laid and compacted.Oliver’s suggestion of a course of engineering brickwork set in concrete to provide lateral and terminal binding was welcome. This ensured that the finished surface met the BSI standards for tarmac driveways and the accuracy and neat finish of the binding enhanced the visual appearance of the new tarmac.Oliver is honest, hard-working, reliable, hands-on and extremely competent. His planning and execution of the work, his management of the crew and materials were beyond reproach.We will have no hesitation in using Oliver and his company Earth and Stone Landscaping for work we shall need doing in the near future.Pat & Richard Marshall
