Everyone is treated with respect as if it is one big family going through the same thing

One of the first things I noticed when I went to see Ceris Newydd for the first time, and had a tour around the place, was the clean fresh smell throughout the building. Many nursing homes I’ve visited over the years when visiting people had a distinct smell of urine, which would hit you the moment you walked in, there was also no dignity for the residents in those places, toilet doors left open while two or three residents sat on the toilets in full view of each other, male or female; residents asking to go to the loo but were left unattended to wet themselves because staff were ‘too busy’. There was none of this at Ceris; the residents were all treated with respect, dignity and kindness. Ceris was always clean, nicely decorated, and smelled fresh at all times.Straight away from the time Mam moved into Ceris Newydd in April 2015, the help and support I received from the staff made life much easier for me. I was able to sleep at night, knowing that someone was there to look after Mam, and that she was safe. From the beginning I was made to feel welcome at Ceris. I didn’t feel like a visitor and could go into the kitchen to make a cup of tea, or a round of toast, or just sit and chat.I know that at times Mam could be difficult, due to the worsening dementia, but the well-trained staff took this in their stride and never dealt with her in any way but with kindness, dignity and gentle coaxing. She was always kept clean, tidy and properly dressed and well cared for. Some of the staff would encourage her to do things to pass the time and they took the trouble to consider her previous hobbies when doing this. They would sit and talk to her, paint her nails; thoughtful little actions that made all the difference. Some visits to Ceris were very difficult when Mam was in a bad mood, or would not speak, and just sit and glare at me. At other times I caught glimpses of the real woman, the Mam I always knew and loved. Whenever the visits were upsetting there were always nursing or care staff on hand that I could confide in, and offload to, which certainly lessened the burden. At times it was hard not to take her behaviour personally and take it to heart. They would reassure me and remind me that it was the dementia that I was seeing, not the real person she used to be. Sometimes they would help me to see the funny side of things when Mam would say really hurtful or rude things to people, which would make me cringe in embarrassment! While Ceris Newydd may not be the cheapest nursing home in the area, it is certainly the best I have seen, and I would recommend it to anyone. I feel I did the best I could for Mam in placing her there. The professional care and dedication she received was unquestionable. The nursing staff were very careful and would take no chances with her health if they felt there was anything wrong, such as chest or urine infections. It gave me peace of mind, something I needed very much following seven or eight years of trying to look after Mam on my own. I struggled immensely with that fact and the feelings of guilt that I was letting her down by putting her in a nursing home and it took months for me to come to terms with that. The Ceris staff were very understanding and reassuring that I was doing what was best and safest for Mam.If the time ever comes when I need a nursing home, I have instructed my son that Ceris is where I would wish to be placed. I would have no qualms about living there if I ever need to be looked after. I would like to thank all the Ceris staff very much for the care and kindness they showed my mother over the three years she was there, and for the support they gave me while she was there. It meant a great deal and made a heart-breaking situation bearable.

Worst nursing home. Inability to communicate with residents and families. See newspaper articles Daily Post. As an update to this post my mother died and despite having my telephone number I was notified of her death via email the day after I believe this was because I complained about the care she was receiving. The staff were also found to have breached sensitive data by the ICO.
