Stayed 3 nights as part of a pre and post night tour. Location is extremely convenient to the tram and Waverly Station. The first 2 nights were such a disappointment. Our room lost power and it couldn't be restored. Hotel was full so they couldn't move us. The manager provided candles and battery operated letters that lit up. What made this so much worse was that the rooms are extremely dark, decorated in dark blues and reds. We had to shower in the dark and hope that the electricity was restored the next day. Breakfast the next morning was also disappointing. Two tables were complaining about the slowness of the kitchen so we only utilized the Continental offerings. After touring around Edinburgh all day, we returned to the hotel and were told that the electricity was restored. We entered our room to discover that this wasn't the case. By this time, our patience was exhausted and we made it clear we needed a new room. Our request was granted. At no time were we offered any type of compensation for the lack of service and inconvenience. After meeting with our tour, we learned from others that they struggled with the darkness of the rooms and hallways, the difficulty of separate elevators for odd and even floor access, the stairs that are unavoidable no matter what floor you are on, the key required hallway access (the one desk clerk struggled with ensuring successful key programming), and the lack of customer service (one of our tour mate's luggage was not placed on our bus, sat unattended in a hotel hallway for 8-10 hours, and had to be driven by taxi to our next destination.)I've been to Edinburgh multiple times and unfortunately, this hotel will not be on our list of places to stay. If you struggle with mobility issues, this isn't the hotel for you. Edinburgh is a beautiful city full of history, romance, and lovely people. I would recommend that people search for alternative hotels for a better level of service.

There is no better location to stay in Edinburgh. Perfect perfect perfect! The decor is fabulous - woodwork in crimson gloss paint!?! And bonus points for art that's more challenging than usual in a hotel. The bar is great, although when we were there (early Saturday evening), the single bartender was over committed. Breakfast was good - fresh croissants go a long way with me, though! Our room was a large, fabulous, high-ceiling affair, with 3 arched windows. The bed extremely comfortable. However, the Wetroom concept bathroom (no differentiation from shower area and the rest of the bathroom) was seriously ill advised. Also, in the way of many modern hotel rooms, there were no drawers for clothes, just a few awkwardly shaped shelves in the desk.

This is such a lovely place. We arrived after a very long and delayed train ride from Liverpool and we were completely exhausted.Somehow the booking agency booked us at the sister property across town. We had chose this location as it was within walking distance to many attractions. The General Manager, Laura Alexander, stepped in cleared everything up. She arranged for two beautiful rooms for the duration of our stay.We were there in March so it was still quite cool outside. So my only complaint is that the heat in the rooms was very difficult to manage. It would work for a little while and then quit again. They had to “go downstairs and turn the heat on” to our room. Not sure how that works??The pub is very nice and a great place to relax after a long day out and about. We didn’t get a chance to try the restaurant but the menu looked great.I would recommend staying here as it was a great experience and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

Prime location, which you pay for. Rooms not to every ones taste, tending to be gloomy, as is the rest of the interior. Lighting in the rooms poorly thought out as to the positioning of the lights and the mirrors.Following a 'phone call from the hotel prior to arrival l we took advantage f the £30 per head dinned special only to find out the fixed menu on arrival was priced at £25. The only benefit of the special menu was a free drink from the drinks menu. The food menu had limited choice, particularly one with a gluten intolerence. The vegetarian dish comprised of chopped up vegetables with the addition of pieces of roast cauliflower on the top.First day breakfast we were greeted by a grumpy individyual who left us eith the impression that he wished he was somewhere else and spent time chatting with other staff members. Subsequent days a different greeter had a better attitude although some items were off e.g. gluten free cereal, prunes. Finally housekeeping left a lot to be desired. Remaking of the beds comprised of pulling back the duvets over an unmade bed. Nothing straightened out. Over our five days the room was not vacuumed once.Over all a disappointment for a four star hotel.

My mum, sister and I stayed for one night at the hotel. We arrived early but luckily our rooms were ready so we were able to drop our bags before exploring the city. The rooms are quite dark but this didn’t bother us too much. We did struggle with the heating in the rooms - they were very warm. Overall the hotel is very nice and in a great location. We went to the restaurant in the evening but we would not recommend it. Our first choices for the main meals were not available and we were told this half way through our starter / after all our drinks had arrived. We would have gone elsewhere otherwise. My second choice was not cooked properly so I had to send it back and the kitchen returned straight away with a third type of meal as they had no more of the second choice. Maybe they’d given me a staff members meal? We didn’t enjoy the food, it wasn’t well cooked and we were really disappointed with how it was all handled. We wish we’d gone somewhere else.

Only went for dinner with a large group and they auctioned of the food, the waiter didn't even know what was in the food she served us. Menu said chocolate mousse but it was white...no chocolate at all. The food tasted good and had a good presentation on the plate but I don't think I'll go back

Dark, poorly lit rooms decorated in black and red velvet. NO DRESSERS - we literally had the choice of either living out of our suitcase or having cloths in little piles on the floor. Our suite had a useless tub taking up tons of space in the middle of the room (while there was - admittedly - a great shower in the bathroom). Lighting was awful - very very dark. Breakfast was very bad by European standards and pathetic on American breakfast standards. Bed was reasonable comfortable and window shades were perfect for keeping out the way early summertime morning Scottish light so at least it hat that going for it.The location was fantastic and could not be beat BUT there must be a dozen nearby hotels. I’d try any of them sight unseen before returning here.Staff smiled a lot but were not actually very helpful. Layout of the hotel required 2 elevators to get to our room. Just a miserable experience, we could not wait to leave.

Lovely 2 nights away here. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Blackout curtains in the room and it was quiet. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel.

Good hotel in a great location, close to tram, train station, bus and point of attractions. The room is quiet and comfortable, although a bit dark. Breakfast is decent.

The Malmaison in general is a nice hotel and well equipped but the layout does seem all over the place and just feels like a warren. The staff are excellent and we’re very helpful. The suite we stayed in was “ok” in terms of layout but not functional for getting ready to go on a night out. The lack of lighting for applying makeup and the lack of a full length mirror was a disappointment and the Bath in the bedroom was a bit of waste of space.Found an old sock in the bedroom and dust in the nooks of the bed which again is a disappointment for the money paid. The coffee machine and the bar in the room are well stocked and the breakfasts in the Malmaison are excellent in my opinion and the staff are so willing to help.Would I stay again, probably not in the suites as I feel for the money paid it is way over priced and could have had the same experience in a cheaper room.
