Free to visit and worth doing along with the priory. If you visit the priory first, its about a 15 minute walk to the castle and the priory guide book includes information on the castle. There is a bit left to explore and there are information boards on hand but I was lucky enough to get talking to a local who knew the history. Impressive remains and earthworks but must of been something in its heyday

Castle Acre, a rural village in north west Norfolk is named after the walled Norman castle built mainly during the 11th and 12th centuries. The Bailey Gate provided security to the townspeople inside the defences and is a fitting way to access the castle ruins which are free to enter. The grounds are an ideal place for a picnic and are only a few minutes walk from the Priory. The village has a rather large 15th century church, St James with quaint houses befitting of such a lovely area. There are several nice places to eat and drink.

Wasn't sure what to expect at first but filled with awe at the place. This was built in 1200 and you can clearly see the classic layout of Castle and village. The moat is deep (but no water) and buildings clear to see.

Great example of Castle ruins. Easy parking and access. Interesting moat configuration. Remains of the Norman Tower Keep were interesting especially the construction of the walls and seeing work that was applied during year from approx 1070. Walk to the Gate and Pub called the Ostrich where lively and comfortable atmosphere was found. Food looked good too.

We came to Castle Acre to visit the priory ruins, but it would be a bit odd to come and then not visit the castle area?! Glad we did, it made an already good visit even better! Kids loved climbing the mounds and up the castle, we ran around and pretended to be attacking the castle, a great time had by all! Looks like this would have been an incredibly impressive building. We walked the short walk from the priory, but there was a small car park next to it as well. No facilities that we saw though...!Best bit... the castle ruins is FREE! ;-)
