St Oswald's Church, Thornton in Lonsdale

A beautiful limestone church with Westmorland slate roof situated in the Parish of Thornton in Lonsdale. The church contains memorials to the Redmayne family, Sarah 1678, John 1680, Margaret 1701 and Ralph 1703 of Thornton Hall. Also, a memorial to Edward Talbot Day Foxcroft of Halsteads (1837-1911). The church was rebuilt during 1933-35 after being damaged by fire.

Beautiful little church

St Oswald's churchyard is beautifully kept with flowerbeds and mown lawns. Most of the graves date from the eighteenth century and also include early graves from Burton in Lonsdale. Famous local famiies such as the Redmaynes, Tathams and Foxcrofts are represented, while inside the church medieval monuments dating back to the eleventh century are to be found. These include a foliated cross slab probably of the fourth baron Mowbray, who rebuilt the original Anglo-Saxon Church on the spot.
