This is a fantastic gem of history. The volunteer who let us in lives next door and is a wealth of knowledge about this historic cottage. Well worth a detour to visit. If no one is here, consult the sign in the window and knock on their door for a look into this wonderful place.

We visited for the first time on their Fairy Open Day. It was lovely to see the children dressed as fairies looking for all the fairies dotted around the cottage garden. We were given lots of very interesting information about the cottage and its previous inhabitants and the village of Torthorwald by some of the very helpful and friendly volunteers. The cottage is just lovely. From the amazing roof structure, to the compact dirt floor. It's very fortunate that this rare example has survived.

Beautiful setting run by friendly people but don’t take a big car up their drive.

Visited for a Fairy Garden event. Absolutely beautiful cottage. A genuine piece of history preserved wonderfully. People running the event were delightful and passionate about looking after the cottage. We will return.

Great hidden gem in the countryside. Volunteers are happy to let you in and give you a tour, as well as explain the history of the building, surroundings, cultural relevancy and the lives of previous inhabitants. The only cruck cottage of its kind left!Free admission, but as it is volunteer run they welcome donations. Didnt feel too pressured to donate, but we did. There are special open days, too. Definitely worth a look, either as a dumfries resident or as a tourist!

Very friendly and knowledgeable hosts, who welcomed us to Cruck Cottage as part of the Doors Open 2022 event. The history of the cottage was fascinating, both its structural features and interior layout. The peat fire was most welcome on a drizzly, windy day. As part of the Doors Open event we were lucky enough to meet some of the volunteers who keep this wonderful glimpse of cottage life in the 17th and 18th Centuries alive. A great attraction for the area. Highly recommended.
