Royal Exchange Arcade
A brilliant contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet especially for a 'Manc' audience, myself included in that description! With a 'set' paired down to the bare minimum it was up to the cast to produce a truly moving performance and experience. This reminded me of my first experience of theatre in the round, a production of Hamlet, starring Robert Lindsey in this same theatre. I just love the Royal Exchange Theatre, the production teams and the plays in the most beautiful setting imaginable. There is no place like it in Britain in my opinion.

No toilets nearby. Coffee shop was busy and we waited ages after ordering. Not recommended. I do like to browse the shops in the arcade though

31/10/22: Halloween. Photo update.Quite a niche Arcade, containing jewelry shops, gentleman's outfitters, a hairdressing salon, a Whiskey Emporium and a card shop, featuring beautiful ornaments & gifts. It boasts a little coffee shop and a small eatery for snacks. Moderately expensive, compared to like establishments within the City. Most of the Royal Exchange building was built by Mills and Murgatroyd between 1867 and 1874. Modified in 1914 by Bradshaw, Gass & Hope, giving it an Edwardian exterior. In 1921 the building was officially opened. The Great Hall was once even greater – in fact, it was twice the size, and known as the ‘largest room in the world’. The building took a devastating hit during the Manchester Blitz in 1940. Reduced in size, the Hall was repaired and the Cotton trade continued until 1968. To this day, if you look up, you can still see the original trading board with the day’s closing figures. A theatre company took up residence in 1973. In 1976, under five artistic directors – Braham Murray, Casper Wrede, Michael Elliott, Richard Negri and James Maxwell, and soon joined by Greg Hersov – the Royal Exchange Theatre Company opened its doors. In 1996, an IRA bomb exploded just fifty metres away from the Royal Exchange building, having a devastating effect on the building. It was reopened by Prince Edward in 1998.
