Great place for a large gathering. Interesting properties and lovely countryside. Well appointed for visiting West Bay Lyme etc. We went towards the end of November and it was so nice there were people swimming in the sea without wetsuits! Global warming eh?

Jumbo Water Tower
Incredible monstrosity that has come to symbolise Colchester by dominating it's skyline for so many decades. Jumbo did not get it's nickname for complimentary reasons, the Balkerne Water Tower representing Victorian era engineering at its red-brick, square column, & cast-iron, zenith. The fact that this no longer functional water tower still stands & has outlasted it's intended working life by so many decades, certainly demands respect for this venerable giant of civil engineering. For as long as I can remember, controversy & dispute has been raging about what to do with Jumbo next, with none of the proposals ever amounting to anything. The fact is that so-called 'Jumbo' amounts to an iron tank mounted on 5 solid brick pedestals. I.e: Jumbo was never designed to house people, so ideas to transform it into flats ignore all the basic design principles. All the while the retired giant water tank stands resolute, if increasingly in a state of neglect, having become so much the defining icon for the town it towers over...

Went to see the angel which completely overwhelmed me. I am so glad the angel is going around the country as it really brings home the devastation knife crime brings.

Jumbo Water Tower
Jumbo or also known as Balkan Water Tower, is the largest remaining Victorian water tower in Britain.Early Victorian Colchester relied for its water supply on many badly polluted wells, and a private Waterworks Company which supplied the wealthier parts of the town for a few hours each day.The 1875 Public Health Act made local Councils directly responsible for public health, and in 1880 Colchester Council bought the Waterworks.A new water tower near Balkerne Gate was soon proposed as part of a plan to provide a 24-hour supply to the whole town. However, the Rev John Irvine, Rector of St. Mary's (now the Arts Centre) protested that the tower would overshadow his Rectory (where the Mercury Theatre now stands). He called it a 'Jumbo', after London Zoo's famous elephant which had been sold, amid public outcry, to the Americanshowman PT Barnum. The new tower was completed in 1883 and was hugely controversial, dividing Colchester's political elite along party lines. It was not immediately successful in providing a constant water supply in 1895, with the construction by James Paxm a new pumping station at the foot of Balkerne this was at last achieved.Jumbo served the town for over a century undecommissioned in the 1980s.Its distinctive still dominates Colchester's skyline.

I like this piece of architecture. You can't go in it and there has been damage done by vandals. After years of neglect work is being done on it, so sometime I'm hoping that a visit will be possible'

Jumbo water tower is an iconic landmark in Colchester town. There are plans for some renovations including lifts, and a cafe at the site to make this one of the popular attractions. Charles Clegg who was a Borough Engineer designed this structure which is about 40.1m tall. It is located near to the high street in Colchester. There is also plan to make it open to public possibly with an entry fee.
