Hygiea Goddess of hygiene
From the Greek Pantheon (Gods and Goddesses), Hygiea is described as the Protectoress of good mental and physical health. Her bowl symbolises pharmacy and medicine. Whilst her large snake represents healing. Her siblings, 4 sisters and 3 brothers as well as both parents are all associated with healing. Hygiea is her dad's PA. He is Asclepius the God (Father) of medicine, healing and recuperation. And whose symbol of a snake wrapped around his staff, is still used in medical circles today.Hygiea's cult rose up in times of plague some 2500 years ago. And our word hygiene comes from her name. This lovely stone statue made in the mid 1800s stands at the far end of the arched trellis walk said to be the longest trellis walk in the UK. At various seasons she is either shaded by wisteria or roses. One of my favourite statues.
