I've done a few courses in upholstery at the School of Stuff and can heartily recommend it - lovely space, well equipped and with patient and highly experienced tutors: Amanda and Sharon. Both are both passionate about upholstery and have a wealth of expertise between them. They aren't too rigid so can generally accomodate individual students projects within their set courses (small class sizes), and it's good to be able to see the various projects develop as this way as gives you a wider insight into the broader range of upholstery. The teaching is informal and relaxed but also structured and very effective - with plenty of tea and biscuits and companionship - they make the learning easy and fun! Good for both career changers and hobbyists, I'd describe it as an oasis of educational pleasure and calm with dedicated staff and a supportive, friendly vibe. Plus it's right in the heart of a buzzing studio complex, slap bang in creative downtown Dalston, with good cafe's on either side to re-fuel at lunchtimes if you fancy it :)

I followed the one year professional furniture restoration course (beginners) and I must say it was disappointing. Since day 1 lessons have been extremely disorganised (Covid excluded), and all the questions the class had throughout the year were always answered with a puzzling I don't know". The few skills acquired would not allow anybody to think about a career change

Absolutely fab place to learn all things upholstery and restoration. The 2 year traditional upholstery careers changers course is excellent and gives not only craft skills but insight across design history and antique furnishings. The short courses are also useful for both beginners and for those that have some knowledge to expand it a little further.

The School of Stuff is a great place to learn in a laid-back and professional environment. I've been studying here for over three years and have learnt so much! Amanda is a patient and supportive teacher and her enthusiasm for upholstery and restoration is infectious. In addition to learning about materials and techniques, the two-year course draws on Amanda's wealth of knowledge about history and design, giving students a better understanding of how to place furniture in context.

Its very unfortunate that a place like this with such great purposes does not have a caring or managing staff. I attempted to enquire about the courses and wrote an email. Which i had no response of, i then attempted to call the number on the website and no answer. I got a call back, which i missed and that was it 2 weeks of trying all for nothkng. I have attempted to message, email and call again but no luck.
