Interesting lil site, nice to see something being sympathetically restored.Just need the signage on site to be restored and more signage about the place to make others aware

The remains of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1148, set against a backdrop of dramatic hills. After its dissolution in 1536, the monks were briefly returned to the abbey during the Pilgrimage of Grace. They remained in possession until the insurrection's collapse and the execution of their abbot

Visited as part of my quest to visit all English heritage sites. Typical English heritage ruins with large open area and some walls and stones. However signage is in poor state and some areas are restricted to restore the ruins as of now.

Beautiful huge old abbey, owned by English Heritage which is lovely to walk around and the village which has a village hall and play park were lovely. Good for an hour or so and would definitely go back.

Sawley Abbey
A beautiful part of the country, Sawley is a lovely little village. Unfortunately on the day we visited we couldn't explore the Abbey as it is currently under renovation. We will definitely be going back again in the near future, can highly recommend.

Sawley Abbey
Beautiful ruins. Couldn't walk the full way as part was blocked off as they are trying to conserve it which is fair enough. Nice little walk. Quiet enough place. Easy to find as well.

Sawley Abbey
Nice ruins of the Abbey with enough left to have a look around with a few information boards to read if a little weather beaten. Some of it is fenced off as they are looking at ways to preserve what's left ,entrance is free and definitely worth a look if in the area.
