Southdean Church And Kirkyard
Located just off the A6088 at Southdean, the ruins of this medieval church harbour a little known fact: It was the meeting place of the Scottish Chieftains and Clan leaders before the invasion of England in 1388 which resulted in the Battle of Otterburn. An inscription on a memorial stone located at the base of the tower reads:SOUDEN KIRK ???? in the year 1388 JAMES, EARL of DOUGLAS and the other Scottish leaders assembled their forces, matured their plans and began the invasion of England which culminated in the battle of Otterburne. When the dead Douglas won the field. These walls repaired and this stone inserted - 1910The roof of this church collapsed in 1688.I have also included a photograph of the information board from the Otterburn battle site too.
