At first glance and from a distance this is a magnificent hotel, beautiful architecture and a historic building. However that's as far as it goes. When you look closer there are many issues, some small, that contribute to make the hotel very disappointing. The room I stayed in is very tired, lots of small issues like air-conditioning not working, window not completely shutting, 2 hairdryers broken. Smelly, old towels. The breakfast was very disappointing. The English breakfast buffet was not good at all. The layout was poor, everything down to small details like plates hidden at the back of under a heat lamp do that you almost burnt your hand reaching for a plate. The staff were friendly but that couldn't save my experience.

Overall very disappointed. While this is a beautiful building and an ideal place to stay when traveling by rail - this hotel lets itself down on so many levels. The extractor fan in our bathroom didn't work, the bath didn't drain well (12 hours to clear) and it was difficult to flush the toilet. In the bedroom we could not close the curtains properly as they were coming of the rail - result being the hotel lights (which were on all night) lit up our room and the quilt didn't fit the bed!The bedroom windows were very dirty and we could not open them. The food was average to good - portions small. On the whole the bathroom / bedroom were clean (except for the windows) the staff were very helpful and attentive. Our room was number 132 which is very small.

Nice, traditional hotel but showing signs of tiredness through its wonderful Victorian grandeur. The wonderful hallway is overpowered by some awful 70's style light structures which if replaced with period crystal or a sculptural feature would display the area at it's best. The rooms were comfortable and adequate. The staff were all polite, attentive and delightful. It was particularly refreshing to see the breakfast room staffed by seniors who gently glided about their duties ensuring everyone was catered for with total professionalism and unhurried fuss.

I arrived to find my room wasn’t ready, so they put me in a room that had just been painted (which isn’t supposed to happen) I got a migraine from the fumes and moved rooms, the receptionist went to check the new room and said it was a good room but I walked in to the most horrendous smell, a moulded ceiling, peeling wall paper and water dripping onto the bed, I complained to a higher member of staff who came to the room with me and immediately identified severe water damage and closed the room off, I was finally placed in a room that was safe to be in - I was offered complimentary breakfast and the food was not too bad, hence the one star. Definitely not worth the hassle and money!

Hotel generally nice, staff friendly and helpfulBedrooms clean and reasonably spacious even had two easy chairs which some hotels don't provideTea, coffee, biscuits etc , complimentary toiletries provided in bathroom overall satisfied with hotel,The only thing that let it down was the food which was bland and undercooked particularly the evening meal, with poor selection. There was no entertainment that didn't particularly bother us but some people with elderly relatives were disappointedThe bar/ lounge area isn't that large with limited seating with residents not being able to get a seatThe location was okay, train station next door which was a bonus.

PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS, ESPECIALLY AROUND CHRISTMAS!Absolutely terrible. A massive function was held in the lobby all night and no one thought to inform the other guests when they booked that you weren't getting any sleep that night.Music so loud you could feel the vibrations, even through earplugs.Went to ask to swap rooms and complain they said there's nothing they can do.Next day my room wasn't cleaned despite the sign outside saying it was. When I went to ask reception again why it wasn't she said the cleaner saw my take it off and go into my room around 12pm... I was at work none stop from 9 to 5pm! I said she's either lying or someone's broken into my room and she refused to acknowledge either option. I said I need a refund as they was the worst experience I've had and they gave me a fake email address. Called back after for the correct one but its been over a month and no ones responded.

It looked really nice from the outside and the reception area does look grand. The rooms are a bit of a let down. We had a standard double and it really was basic. The room was tiny, hardly any space between the bed and a wall one side and a window the other side. The room looked out onto the road and the window was made up of two sliding panes. One was wedged open and it let all the outside noise in. We mentioned it the next morning and one woman knew what we were on about and sent a maintenance guy to remove the wooden block holding it open. There was no complimentary bottles of water in the room, the kettle was scaled so I didn't want to use it. Bathroom was OK, shower screen leaked so made a huge puddle on the floor.Only stayed 2 nights, very close to town centre and train station. Couldn't hear any train noise at all, so that was good. Stayed in better hotels.

Superb location, literally next door to the train station. Check in was a smooth process. The room was a little hard to find, but the staff helped us. The bar area was nice and the drinks were reasonably priced. Room itself was small but perfectly acceptable, it was clean and comfortable. Would definitely return.

My stay was enjoyable, I appreciated the that I could adjust my heating in the room. Nice to see they have tea and coffee in the rooms. The room was a good size just for me and I was given a quiet section as I had asked. Staff were accommodating. The place felt a little dated but over all a good experience.

Placed looked amazing when we walked in. We visited in December so the hotel had its Christmas trees up. However the toilets were disgusting for a hotel like this. Seats hanging off. Extremely dirty, no toilet paper. In all the pubs I’d been in, in hull none were as disgusting as this place. Totally shocked and disappointed. Staff slow as serving. People sat around waiting for food and maybe to pass the time. Expensive drinks but what do you expect from a hotel near the station. I’ll be giving it a miss next time.
