With deepest regret, thought of sharing our recent experience about horse riding lessons for our autistic son.Recently in first week of January 2019,we thought it's apt time for our son to join riding lessons and got information about this riding school from his special needs school. From the information,we thought Snowball farm is ideal as it was closest to us as well and thought of checking with them if they have RDA group. We contacted them and informed that our son is autistic with limited verbal capacity and studying in special needs school. Our first visit for enquiry was with our son itself, so they have seen him. They said that's fine, but we need to get a letter from our GP stating that he's fit for riding and fine with horses. We were doubtful how GP could provide such a letter, but they said it's their formality for special needs kids. When we contacted NHS,they were also puzzled, but asked us to fill in a form and wait for a month as it's out of scope work for NHS. We again contacted Snowball farm and they insisted us that atleast an email from GP is required as part of their insurance and we went back to NHS and provided them with the email address of the farm.About a month later,GP called up and said it's not possible(they had never got this request before) and if at all it's mandatory,we need to pay £30 and asked me to contact the riding school again and explain them that a GP who don't have any idea about my son's behaviour cannot provide such an information and it's upto the parents to make such decisions.I contacted Snowball staff and they said they will contact me again after further discussions, but they didn't until I reached them again to check the status. After repeated phone calls, finally they said,I can bring my son for lessons, but they don't have suitable lessons free during weekends and we need to wait further. Finally after repeated phone calls, they said we can bring him and their lead tutor will work with him and decide suitable timing for future lessons.Towards the end of february,we took him for half an hour paying 36£(2£ extra) as it's with lead tutor and it all went fine.We couldn't find any issues and she also didn't mention anything to us and the reception lady said she will contact me with a suitable time for next saturday lessons. My son wanted to extend the session as well and still ask for it as he really enjoyed the lesson and never misbehaved in those 20 minutes during the session.I was waiting for her call and finally I called her on friday and she put me on hold to talk to the tutor and later said their place is not suitable for my son, they don't have ponies suiting him or tutor suiting his needs and provided us details of South Bucks disabled riding school. We were really disappointed as they could have informed us earlier rather than making us wait for around 2 months and wasting our time and money as we have clearly mentioned his issues to them.Few questions which come to our mind at this point of time are:1.If they don't have a RDA group, why they agreed in the first instance itself?2.Why they insisted for GP letter though NHS itself had not got such a request in the past?Had they ever got such a letter for any other student?3.Was his first session an exam ?,if they wanted to assess him, they could have done that way back in January itself instead of waiting for so long. With all the above points about our recent experience,I request you not to visit this place with a special needs kid as other parents,if not all, could also face similar experience and end up in such a painful situation. It’s indeed sad that they do such a discrimination in a developed country like UK.A major point which Snowball farm staff conveniently forgot is that special needs kids are also humans with a heart :(.When my son asked for horse this saturday,I was crying, not able to explain what really happened :(
