Minster Walk Guest House
Very cosy and small place. Had an issue with the shower- it blocked and water flooded everywhere then a really bad sewage smell- this needs looked at as it's really unhealthy. Room was way too warm because the heating was always on so stuffy. Nowhere to place anything in the bathroom- no towel rack, no shelves. Also need more shelves in the room to set stuff. Staff were lovely so I can't fault them.Small touches like good quality tea/ coffee/biscuits was nice. The breakfast hamper was fine - good selection. Convenient to the shambles and other shops in the area.Be warned - if you don't do stairs well I'm not sure about disabled access you'd need to ask the proprietor.

Minster Walk Guest House was the best place we stayed on our UK trip (4 other places to compare).Room: we stayed in two three/four person rooms. The decor was well put together, unique, well kept, and modern. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the snacks/beverage offerings were great. No A/C (very common in the UK) but they provided great fans so we were not uncomfortable (temp was about 70-75 degrees F when we were there). The lobby is also really great, lots of seating and coffee/tea/snacks available.Service: the staff was so friendly and helpful. They were such a delight!Breakfast: you are provided with a list of options for the next day. They then bring a basket with your order to your room in the morning. It was both delicious food and the cutest presentation. It was a hospitality highlight of our trip!Location: we loved the location. It is an easy walk to city center but not in the thick of the touristy part so it not only felt safe but it was also nice and quiet (great for sleeping in and with the windows open). There are a number of pubs and restaurants within a 30 second walk (a great pub with pizza right next door) and 5 minutes. Will be recommending to friends and family, along with the city of York in general.

Nice guest house located just opposite York Museum Gardens and a short stoll down to the River. The parking is £15 for 24 hours and is worth it to park just around the corner. Our room was nicely decorated, very quiet and comfy bed. Personally I didn't like the pillows but I still slept well! Really enjoyed the included breakfast which was delivered to our room. The only disappointment was there were no homemade sweet treats as advertised but would stay again!

It is a wonderful place to stay. The location is ideal, there is parking close by further down the street. The rooms are spacious, breakfast can be brought up to your room if you prefer. There is a pub next door, meaning no walking for a pint if wanting to stay close by. Everything is in walking distance.

Beware that this place has zero understanding or flexibility if you aren’t able to make it. You willbe charged for your entire stay, even if it is physically impossible for you to make it. I had a room booked for two nights. Those two nights just happened to be during Storm Babet, when all rail service between London and York was cancelled for two days. This was not some made-up, impossible-to-verify personal emergency. This was a national emergency that was extensively reported in the media. But the response from Minster Walk was, tough luck. They didn’t discount the bill even one pound, even though they didn’t have to clean the room or make our breakfast. Free money for them, nothing for us.

Can’t speak highly enough of this lovely place. Great location- short walk from train station and a 5 minute walk to the city centre. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly and hospitable hosts who gave us all the info we needed for our stay. Arriving at our room, we were thrilled to find a spotless, charming, perfectly presented room with a huge comfortable bed and view of the minster. We filled out a sheet for breakfast with options for delivery to the room or eating downstairs. We opted for eating in the room and it came in a charming basket to the door. We will definitely recommend to friends and will come back again!

The best place we have stayed at in the UK, I cannot recommend highly enough and would most definitely stay here again in the future.Such a gem, the rooms are so clean, the beds super comfy and the building is surprisingly quiet bearing in mind the building is so close the centre. The hotel is beautiful and the children obviously enjoyed the free sweets and cake. The breakfast is wonderful, the portions are huge, and is delivered to your room in a picnic basket, which means you get to lie in the comfy beds for even longer - heaven!

Thanks for responding to my critique of Minster Walk Guest House. There are a few points within your email that need addressing:You mention that “We spent a fair bit of time with yourself and Michael over your stay and at no point did you mention anything was wrong at all.” That is INCORRECT. No-one spent any time with us at all.“…you seemed happy throughout your stay then were really appreciative that we looked after your bags post check-out…” INCORRECT. I don’t know who made the assumption that we were happy throughout our stay because we did not speak to anyone! At no stage did we ask anyone at Minster Walk to look after our bags.“…then welcomed you back for a cup of tea and cake before you retrieved your bags and went to catch your train…” ENTIRELY UNTRUE At no stage were we welcomed with a cup of tea and cake.“…you both commented to Lisa that you had had a lovely stay.” INCORRECT. We did not meet Lisa. The only communication I had with Lisa was to send her a text, as a matter of courtesy, to let her know that we had arrived at the guest house. We hope future guests have a more genuine experience than ours. Our visit to Minster Walk commenced promisingly enough, with a flurry of emails emphasising how much the team was looking forward to our visit. How things were to change..Upon arrival the absence of staff meant we let ourselves in to the guest house via the code system previously advised. Unlike other BnBs and guest houses in our experience, this property does not boast a staff member in regular attendance - other than at breakfast, of which more below. Our room was adequate - other than its bleak outlook, set below a car park and brick wall. For any privacy we had to draw the blinds night and day. Despite a tiresome need to re-arrange the room to accommodate a second suitcase, we appreciated the tea and coffee bags provided. The room had a railway theme, celebrating the glories of steam.Notwithstanding the promises of welcome in the proprietor's effusive system generated emails, extraordinarily, no-one spoke to us over our three day visit. Other than a noisy vacuum cleaner there was no sign of our welcome committee. There must be a word of warning about the cheap breakfast offering. Many travellers appreciating British small-scale accommodation, will hope to be offered a traditional British breakfast; a sausage, egg, perhaps bacon and tomato. The cheap hot-dog-like mini-sausage offered on a white roll (termed a 'bap') was an entirely unacceptable and unhealthy alternative. But more than anything, the breakfast offering is emblematic of the Minster Walk establishment itself; done to suit the proprietors, to minimise effort and cost and to be accomplished with negligible interaction with the guests. After three days we left, unwelcomed, uncared for and entirely unrecognised. The Minster Walk operation is a fraud - because it is not the warm home away from home on offer. It is a cynical, anonymous operation, consciously eschewing interaction with its guests, constructed to operate 'on automatic pilot'. In the words of an old Herman's Hermits tune, it's a must to avoid.""
