Silchester Roman Walls - English Heritage Car Park

We used to love to regularly walk around the Roman Walls and Amphitheatre but haven’t been for a few years. Yesterday we walked the north wall and was really disappointed to find it so overgrown. In places the pathway was single file only and by the North Gate, you can no longer walk at the base of the wall as the nettles have taken over.I haven’t had chance to go via the South side to see how that has been maintained, but the site needs a lot of work.

Great in history, short in visuals...Google took me (car) to what seemed like the wrong place. The English Heritage carpark is to the West, although I guess one could possibly access the ruins from the East near the church (as per Google)..I didn't try....it's just the road signs don't point that way! Free entry. Big free car park. There are toilets of a sort...portaloo. The access path to the ruins from the carpark is smooth and wide, so ok for those with mobility issues. We walked around the outside of the walls. Overgrown in most places and not very high. Once is enough.

Great for a quick 2 mile circular walk. Can get busy when the weather is nice. Car park is free.

Wow wow what a beautiful place to go first time they, don't pay to get in, car park is free, you follow the map that's they, it's a big place big fields Roman town is huge, you can imgine what was once they, great roman grounds for the kids, to get Involved in, and learn.

Ordinary car park, some information boards about the nearby roman ruins. Access to car park is by narrow country roads.

Excellent place for a quiet walk with the family or dog walking.Information boards available as you walk around not suitable for people with limited mobility.Car park is freebut it shuts at 4pm in the winter months.

Pleasant walk around the ancient Roman walls of Silchester. Large free car park and a couple of route choices. Nothing in the way of shops or refreshments. There is a portaloo if you're desperate. A few description plates cover the history of the area. If you're looking for somewhere for a nice stroll, this is a good option.

There is little remaining of this huge Roman town other than the vast city wall that surrounds the site. Previous excavations have uncovered much, and the amphitheatre can now be visited. It's also possible to see some of the foundation footprints that are partially visible in the fields.You can walk atop the wall if you're feeling adventurous but take care as it is a little demanding and extremely uneven. Anyone with mobility issues would struggle to negotiate the trails and gates at this site.There's plenty of parking, although there is a height barrier to keep out unwanted visitors. However there is space by the gate for one or two campervans.It's free to visit and perfect for dog walkers or if you like a good stroll, however walking shoes are advisable.
