The Woodingdean Water Well is the deepest hand-dug well in the world, at 390 metres (1,280 ft) deep. It was dug to provide water for a workhouse. It dates from 1862 and took 4 years to dig. on the well started in 1858, and was finished. It’s on the site of the Nuffield Hospital in Woodingdean, near Brighton and Hove. It’s easy to spot near the reception building as you enter the site. You can’t see far down the well as it’s filled with water. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.
