First time in Wells, we were so excited to have some decent fish & chips, this excitement didn’t last long. On walking in it was reasonably busy, but tables hadn’t been cleared so we went up stairs, we sat near window looking over harbour. Then the fish & chips came, OMG fish initially looked amazing good thick portion sitting on top of chips, but then tucking into it, it was all over cooked & must have been sitting in fryers for ages, £55 later we walked out leaving most of the food & as we did the uncleared table situation had got a lot worse. No staff.Shocking place, I can safely say we won’t be back, Sorry guys!!!

Having been a reliable customer in French’s for many years, I came to Wells to see that Plattens had had a make over since I last visited. So I gave it a try one Wednesday evening. I found the screens to be a great way to place your order and the service was very quick (it was a wet Wednesday evening). I ordered 2 x cod and chips and an extra half potion of chips. This served 3 adults but if you had a big appetite you would want your own portion of both.I couldn’t find fault with the food, lovely chips, cooked well and not dry. Fish was juicy and batter not greasy. Stokes sauces in abundance. Staff were friendly.I think I am a convert to Plattens and would certainly visit again.

Sadly it feels like Plattens has gone down hill. We have been coming back to this place each summer for years for our fish and chip fix and it has always been great - until this year (2023).After putting our order in through the new self service touch screens we had to wait over half an hour for our order. Others had been waiting even longer. Perhaps it would make sense to have more than one person on the fryers during the busier times?Unfortunately, what came was not worth the wait. The chips were good, but the fish was bone dry, almost like it has been sitting in the warmer all day.I don't think we will be coming back again any time soon.Oh, forgot to mention inflation has paid a visit. Two portions of fish and chips and a drink will set you back the better part of £30. Guess that is to be expected in the current environment, and probably would not have got a mention if the food was still good.

Not a very good experience today, been here many times too. Ordered 2 smaller portions of cod/chips, when it arrived, couldn't believe our eyes, served on a sandwich/side plate size plate, no room to move the food around even, only to discover the fish was raw in the middle. The waitress did change it but my husband had finished his, totally spoilt our lunch, thought a good will gesture would have been appropriate but never happened. Not sure we'd revisit after this tbh.

Few days away in Norfolk end of Nov, visited Wells for wander and fish and chips. Decided to eat in, friendly efficient staff, great food and dog friendly. I can understand the cost of fish and chips these days, but unsure how you justify £2.20 for a bread roll and £2.50 for small pot of gravy!!

I'm going to be honest, when looking at some of the recent reviews we were initally put off, but as the queue was smaller here than the other fish & chip shop we decided it was worth the gamble. It's super easy to order from the screen and the queue moved relatively quickly (it was prime time on a Saturday for dinner). We ordered 3x fish and chips and one person had a battered sausage and a fishcake. And actually we couldn't fault any of the food. The fish was cooked well and so were the chips. The only thing I'd say is the size of the three fishes varied quite significantly but no one seemed to grumble about it.

Being local I have had my fair share of fish and chips in wells, having a few bad experiences with platten’s since it’s “renovation” I tend not to go there, I have had no choice but to visit again today as the other rival/better fish and chip shop on the front was sadly closed..I ordered plaice and chips for my meal, upon returning home to eat my takeaway I have come to utter disbelief, my plaice had absolutely no edible meat, I feel they may have battered and cooked the fish skin and not the meat..The rest of the order was cold like it had been cooked ages ago, cod was tasteless, no bread rolls as per order. At these prices I’m p!ssed.. Never going back,,

It's been a few years since we've been here and it's had a spruce up which has really improved the place. I feel they'd had a really busy day when we arrived for a fish and chip tea. Service wasn't as bright and cheery as we've experienced in the past. It wasn't rude though, so I'm holding back and giving the benefit of the doubt. There were a few things that had ran out, which wasn't a great start, but we all managed to find something that we (2 x adults and 2 x children) liked. The fish I had was cooked nicely, with crispy batter, albeit thinner than I am used to, but the biggest letdown was the lack of seasoning. I rarely put additional salt and pepper on my fish and chips unless I find myself in some ropey restaurant, so it was a real shame that this put such a downer on my meal. I've never had this a Plattens before. But at least is was hot and with plenty of sauce, salt, pepper and vinegar, it was edible. Very disappointed at the price v quality. I will go again, based on previous visits, but not this one.
