York Cold War Bunker
Most unusual relic of the Cold War. The only bunker of its kind left in the Country. It was built as part of a system to record and track any atom bombs dropped using special machines and manned by volunteers of the Royal Observer Corp. It had its own water, generator and dormitories for men and women.

Tours start on the hour when open. The tour guide is knowledgeable and the history of the place is fascinating. Definitely an interestinf trip out for the family or history buffs.

I really enjoyed this visit. Staff were great, and very informative. Quite a chilling insight into the awfulness of what a nuclear war would have been like. Understandably it's a hands off" museum

Scary to see the government of the 1960s care as little as the current government. These bunkers monitored, whilst the the general population burnt and died of radiation sickness. Well worth seeing.

Absolutely extraordinary place! I'm so glad the English Heritage was able to save and restore this bunker. The staff were very knowledgeable and answered all questions.The tour lasts for about an hour. Stairs on entry getting in and down to the bunker (I'd say no more than 50).Visitors aren't allowed to touch anything or use flash photography. The cost was just under £10 for an adult entry and free for members. Free car park at entrance.Tours are on the hour, and there's a short 10 minute film before the tour.

A hidden gem, Ethan our guide was both informative and amusing. Very interesting, with the smallest national heritage gift shop. Not really underground if you are worried!

Firstly this is a must go see. So please don't be put off by me rating only 4 stars. The only reason for this was I felt rushed. I'd of liked to taken a little longer to read the information boards and take photos at my leisure. It's a quick tour which is very interesting and very informative. Our guide was lovely and very knowledgeable. I'm wondering if tours are short because this building isn't very large. The quicker they are, the more people can go and visit. Book in advance as more chance of getting in.

Really enjoyed the guided tour, knowledgeable guide pointed out things you would have missed if walking around by yourselfThey are really proud of their exhibit and make it quite clear no touchingMake sure you book in advance as they only allow 15 people in at a timeTakes about 55 minutes and starts on the hourQuiet area with ample parkingWould definitely visit again
