Line and Light Photography Courses

Very detailed photography course, professional and very experience teaching which i enjoy & understand through out the learning session! Stage 1 & 2 completed, and I'm now more confidence to shoot with what been taught ❤️ Thank you Paul & Martine

Having previously identified the Jubilee Campus as having a significant cluster of iconic architectural buildings that I wanted to visit and photograph, I was rather pleased to subsequently come across a specialist photography business that ran a course there that seemed to harmonise with all my camera requirements. I unhesitatingly booked in advance on the Line + Light Modern Architecture course for late September, 2021.I have been on various courses and shoots, ranging from how to wean myself off the auto settings on my first DSLR, or brushing up my Lightroom skills, to a residential course in the Red Sea improving my underwater camera techniques, so this looked just what I wanted. As I had taken shots at the new Design District on Greenwich Peninsular and underneath the Shard (the only way is up) earlier in the year, and previously taken modern architecture images in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, I was rather looking forward to this programme.I was not disappointed.The session started with greetings, personal introductions and a welcoming coffee after my 60 mile drive (at least one participant came a bit further). It seemed a high accolade that of our group of eight included three architects and an engineer married to an architect. Arrangements for the day were outlined. Pity perhaps L+L has no control over the weather as we lacked azure skies, but it was at least dry and warm, and I could make the best of the moody sky in post-shot editing.Our course was led by Martine Hamilton Knight who was friendly, supportive and informative throughout. We stated off in a meeting room at the Jubilee Conference Centre where Martine gave us a detailed PowerPoint presentation of key aspects of modern architectural photography along with some key tips for the day. By mid-morning we set off as a group to shoot the more interesting buildings around the Campus, pausing at various vantage points where we were both collectively and individually given tips and help from Martine. During the day some of us were loaned a high-end Manfrotto tripod to try out, or a TPE lens. I must have spent a couple of hours with one of the latter, which I found rather interesting, if a bit unfamiliar at first. At least it produced pretty reasonable results.Martine had also arranged for us to photograph the inside of several buildings (despite Covid – so we masked up). This was a great opportunity to see some interesting features and find out how to make the best of locations – even how to reposition “props”. She took a fun photo of us all lined up at the end of the long Winter Gardens inside the Net-Carbon Zero building, behind our tripods, or cameras in hand, as if about to start an Olympic race, or may be at some Wild West shoot out.Martine’s depth of professional knowledge was self-evident over the course of the workshop. She had a ready answer for all questions, whether pithy or technical, based on her wealth of experience. She was also quite prepared to give more direct guidance when she felt it was needed, but in an amicable way.The Jubilee Campus is an exceptional place to attend a course like this with so many “architectural treats” in such close proximity. So, twinned with a first-class tutor and guide, the course was highly enjoyable and represented great value.A few days later, I contacted the Programme Secretary at my camera club with the confident recommendation that Martine ought to be invited as a speaker, either during the present season, or sometime in the next. Perhaps I was not too surprised when there was a prompt reply from our committee member, a one-time Secretary of the Royal Photographic Society, telling me she knew Martine well and how VERY good L+L are. Perhaps predictably, Martine had been a guest at my club some years before I joined and is now on the short-list to be invited again. Putting my own money where my mouth is, I have booked another L+L course for spring next year.Don’t you feel extra pleased when something you take time to choose exceeds your expectations.David S Dixon, BSc, FRGS

I’ve recently completed stage 1&2 and I cannot rate these guys enough. They have given me so much confidence to do what I want to do. They are so knowledgeable, patient and friendly. I was very nervous about the first course but was very soon put at ease. There is no snobbery over ability, camera, style or budget. They will help you with any individual queries but keep the group moving through the day. The courses have the perfect balance of theory and practice. Anyone looking to improve their knowledge, whatever level, will benefit from Line & Light. I cannot recommend them enough.

Had a great day with Martine and Bob on an Introduction to Photography course. The course was the perfect balance of learning new skills in the classroom followed by putting everything into practice outdoors. Martine and Bob were very knowledgable and approachable if I had any questions and I would highly recommend booking one of Line and Light's photography courses.
