Even though these ferries are one of the only lifelines to the islands, the boats themselves are always breaking down, they stink and certain office staff can be rude on occasion. The boats need to be replaced, there is always the plane to the outer isles but the ferry is the cheapest and it shows.

Very smooth sailing, the whole process was effortless when we arrived at the port to get loaded.Also the food on board was reasonable and not over priced. Made for a nice breakfast while taking in the views of Orkney.

I have travelled as a tourist several times between Houton and Lyness. Very friendly and helpful staff, perfectly on schedule. If you travel by car in the holiday season, make sure you have a reservation. Reservations are easily made by a phonecall to the office. Local Orcadians advised me to ask for a booking reference with your reservation.
