About the Business

Stockhill Wood | Forestry England | Renowned for its nightjar and long-eared owl populations, there is no shortage of wildlife to see if you enjoy bird watching. There is a medium sized car park, a small number of picnic benches and a circular easy access trail. The ground reveals the rise and fall of lead mining over 2,000 years. The Mendip Hills had rich veins of lead running just beneath the surface in seams. These seams or 'rakes' were dug and then reworked over generations as machinery and techniques improved. This activity has led to the industrial wasteland or gruffy ground of lumps, bumps and rock outcrops you see today.

Genuinely one of the prettiest woods around. Lovely moss, lovely trees, and an extraordinary vastness that makes you feel like you’re in medieval, tree-clustered England.

A wonderful well managed wood. Plenty of parking although it does get busy. There are a few marked trails, and plenty of other trails and paths to follow throughout the woods. It's s fantastic place to bring kids for an afternoon of exploring. Even though the car park was busy when we arrived the woods themselves are so large that we only saw one other family.

Great walk, there's a large car park, lots of trails to walk.Couldn't find a map though at the woods so best to see if you can find a trail map online. We followed the outside path and walked for around an hour and a half and only saw another person once in that time, admittedly it was on a Friday at 1pm so maybe not a true test of how busy it can be.Will certainly go again some time.

There’s something really quite magical about this place. So steeped in pre history you can almost feel the ancestors walking. The wood is lovely but I’m really talking about the ancient barrows on the opposite side of the road. Thousands of years of history and no signs to let you know! A wonderful place to connect and unwind, wander and think.

Found this place whilst driving somewhere else. Really lovely place. Have only explored a small portion of it. Dogs loved it as will as me. Will definitely be againEDIT:I have been back today and although muddy in places it was still a beautiful walk. I have only explored part of the woods, so I'm looking forward to doing more exploring
