Butley Foot Ferry

The smallest passenger pay ferry in Europe, a volunteer run rowboat ferry across the river Butley. Set in stunning Suffolk countryside, cycle or walk to cross it on your circular route.

What a fantastic service for anyone that wants to do a walk in this beautiful area. The volunteers who run it are absolutely wonderful.

Great little foot and bicycle ferry. A local volunteer rows you across the river in a little boat. Only open weekends and bank holidays in season

A very peaceful location especially during the week , when ferry isn't running. The approach is along a a loose and bumpy track . Passable on any bike but only really suitable for bikes with mountain bike style tyres

A fantastic day out. On a windy bright sunny day we parked at the signed car park. Walked to the river and along to the smallest licenced ferry in Europe.. our part of 7 including 4 and 6 year oldwe walked to orford and had a very acceptable lunch at the king's Head. On the way back we took the long route by the river and ran out of time to get the last ferry back at 4. Fortunately the kind people at the ferry told us to ring if we were late. They waited and took us back having arrived 15 minutes late. We walked 8 miles and saw a huge number of animals including many species of birds .Hares and rabbits. A perfect walk in the country. Circular walks with a one way trip over the river is also possible.
