Since the very beginning I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience, i.e. D&D *AND* meeting a lot of interesting friendly people. At first I thought I'd just commit to 1 session maybe every 2 weeks and now I'm practically part of the set!Biggest shout out to Jamie and Hannah who've been to every single sessions without fail and make sure everything run as smoothly as possible even during difficult times so that us nerds can have fun rolling dice, attack gelatinous cuboid creatures, do crazy acrobatics, cast endless fireballs etc!Even though this group's tag line is No commitment D&D" (I think)

D&D done well. Worth the money given how easy they make it for a new / non-regular player. Lots of sessions so convenient for people who can't commit to a specific time consistently BUT their world building and campaigns tie everything together so feel tied in instead of playing a series of one-shots.

I've had such a great time at Avalon! I joined the group back in April and I have been going pretty much every week since. To me, Avalon is great for both new and experimented D&D players. It marries the best bits of D&D 5e with some home-brewed improvements. One of my favourites is the ability to drop into as many or as few sessions as you want (life carries on without you in Avalon while you're on holiday, but you can stay up-to-date on everything through Discord). What makes Avalon special is also its wonderful community of players: there are over a hundred of us, not only going on adventures in, but meeting for social events, board game days, etc. The community is super inclusive, encouraging creativity, making sure everyone gets a voice, and while respecting players' boundaries. Finally, I love that at Avalon, we are able to experiment with new ways of playing. We've had one-shots of different systems (Star Wars 5e FTW), and experimented with bigger tables (Season 1 finale boss battle with 20ish players), as well as multi-tables events (being able to run to another table so that your character can help out other players in trouble in another part of town!)Overall I highly recommend giving Mutant Freaks a try, you'll love it!

Great place to meet like minded people. Not your regular D&D club. The environment is well designed for an immersive D&D experience. Inclusive, friendly community with a persistent D&D world you can build a character in and then just drop in and out whenever you like. I go 2-3 times a month, others go lots more than me - but it’s really fun to play no matter how often you go!

Friend of mine introduced me to Avalon and I enjoyed it. The best part are the people; they're very welcoming to newcomers regardless of your knowledge level of D&D. That being said, I didn't got back after my 2nd session mostly because the venue is very dirty & unhygienic which made me super uncomfortable. They also raised their prices too even though the venue is subpar. The main appeal to me was you can drop in and out whenever you want since it's rare people finish D&D campaigns, but what they *don't* tell you about until you sign up is all the extra discord stuff you do which is time consuming & goes against the main appeal.

“I joined Mutant Freaks needing some new friends, a new hobby and never having played D&D before.. and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s become the highlight of my week to be able to hang out with some of my now favourite people, roll dice and learn D&D in one of the most welcoming environments! Thanks Mutant Freaks! ❤️”

An incredible place to play D&D whenever you wish. Extremely friendly and welcoming community. The storylines and sessions are well thought, the atmosphere is warm and they serve drinks and food right to your table. Everything you could wish for and more! 10/10

Am there pretty much multiple times a week. Guess that means I thoroughly enjoy myself coming here and what a great place it is.There are multiple ways to get engaged, and you can spend as much or as little time in the shared world, so much so that something as random as a frog which was a throwaway joke is now in the collective mind of most players because of the community's choice.

TL;DR: Mutant Freaks (MF) provides an accessible way to try DnD, but look elsewhere if you want the true DnD experience. Also, they don't prioritise retaining customers and focus on churning through new customers instead.Their claims of being a community-led safe space are dubious. The Good:- MF targets the scheduling issue which plagues DnD groups and offers a drop-in/drop-out world to play DnD in.- They run an online platform allowing interaction with the world (through player-roleplay and out-of-game crafting) when not playing in person.- Sessions/experiences are varied and allow you to meet many different people, as you are unlikely to always play with the same group. The Bad:- Sessions are 2.5 hours, but about a third of that will be wasted on introductions, announcements and breaks, leaving 1.5 hours of actual gameplay.- Sessions are usually run with 7 people per table, meaning things are generally very rushed, with minimal air time for your character.- The quality of your session depends on the Game Master (GM) and the players on that table, which you have limited control over.- The world works at the expense of character development: don't arrive at MF expecting your character's backstory or actions to matter.- Character progression is limited, with a strict level cap: after a few months, the MF expectation is to retire that character and build a new one, regardless of your emotional investment. The Ugly:- MF pitches itself as a community-led world and company, but this is not true: rules are often changed arbitrarily without notice or consultation of the player base, they don't seriously moderate bad behaviours, they fail to respond to customer concerns and feedback despite a promise that each will receive a reply if requested, and they limit community discussion of the rules/world.- The community imploded over the summer after multiple women raised serious allegations against one of the two directors of MF, which MF handled poorly and, as a result, shattered the feeling of them providing a safe space.- Due to the above, the limited character progression, and the killing off of certain characters in forced deadly" sessions
