Lived in Berkhamsted for a while and regularly drive past this restaurant but until last weekend, hadn't ventured in. Pleasantly surprised on booking brunch that very morning that they actually had table available unlike some others in town.We were a group of 5 plus a very friendly dog. We all had something different from French Toast to Shaksuka. I had the Full Plates Breakfast with a side order of their Hash Bites with freshly squeezed OJ to drink.Everything was delicious, the only minor negative which I mentioned at the time was that the poached egg had been overcooked so didn't have any delicious gooey yolk to enjoy.Staff were very friendly and gave the dog a bowl of water along with a treat. Will 100% be returning soon.

Plates is brought to us by the coffee shop crew of Fred & Ginger, stalwarts on the high streets of Berkhamsted and Kings Langley. It looks inviting, the menu is appealing and the decor has a modern, clean, minimalist aesthetic. We have been several times but I’m not sure Plates is for me. The bones of the business are earnest - tapas style menu, seasonal produce, natural wines - but there is something that doesn’t work here.Cocktails are great. Natural wine selection is robust and staff are knowledgeable about it. The small plates served tapas style offer many options that are changed frequently and always sound good on paper but unfortunately, were just a bit underwhelming on arrival. Some dishes hit, more missed unfortunately - on both dinner occasions. The real let down are the large plates, they just don’t slap. There are usually three to choose from; meat, veg and fish but were just a bit … meh. Better off going full tapas style small plates and snacks. The first time we visited was definitely a better experience. Most small plates were well received. The second visit, we felt a little disappointed. Out of the six small plates we ordered, half were good. Not wow. But good.It does feel a bit style over substance but I don’t think it means to be. The intentions of this restaurant are good and it’s so promising on the surface. The food needs to level up a bit more in terms of flavour profiles, seasoning and sometimes presentation to reach the standard of the surroundings and drinks… it’s such a shame and I don’t like leaving a negative review, I hope this can be viewed as constructive. Staff are great.Brunch was good although my companion wasn’t that enamoured with their dish unfortunately. I would return for another mid morning session - the reviews reflect breakfast and brunch are done well here - and perhaps dinner again one day hoping it to be third time lucky.I love the aspiration of this restaurant and what it’s trying to be but regrettably, it is just lacking the most crucial element come dinner time.

After a delicious breakfast to satisfy your morning hunger? Look no further because Plates in Berko is the plates for you. Gazing upon the fruitful menu certainly had me spoilt for choice. I battled several inner demons until deciding upon the vegetarian breakfast. A breakfast I will not - and cannot - ever forget. From the succulent vine tomatoes to the pesto infused mushrooms, my taste buds were taken on an informative tour around flavour town. The cherry on top of my time at this lovely cafe was the impeccable service. The waitress Emma was so kind and helpful - not to mention her witty sense of humour. Thank you Emma and thank you Plates.

Sushma and team were really helpful catering for our big group for a working meeting (10). Food was really yummy, service was great, and the team were really friendly! It was a bonus that they are also dog friendly, so we could bring a few dogs with us :)

We went for breakfast for my dads birthday. What a find. Absolutely amazing place. Really enjoyed the breakfast and ambiance of the restaurant. The only small criticism i have is that due to how efficient the servers were they cleared some of the plates away before some of our party had finished. I always feel they should be cleared at the end when everyone has finished. Putting this aside I would highly recommend plates.

I really enjoyed my breakfast. There were a few new flavours to explore in my full English. This won't suit traditionalists, but I think it worked. The coffee is really good too. Expect to pay much more than your average cafe.

Lovely experience today at Plates. Waiters were lovely and very helpful and the food was delicious! Would definitely recommend. Coffee offered with the breakfast for free, which was the cherry on top. Manager was really nice!
