Interesting old ruined church ! Imagine it’s quite eerie when the sun isn’t shining like the day I visited. You can walk into the main bit of the church but the surrounding part has been fenced off, I assume for safety reasons

A gem of a ruin, a definite hidden beauty. The church only has its exteria walls, which sre mostly covered by plants. There is a beautiful tree in the centre of the church and surrounding all around it. You can easily miss this as you drive.. Or even walk past.Parking is on the road only and you have to pick your way through on narrow paths. It a very peaceful and wonderful place to visit.

Great place for photography, also nice woods to explore. Always fun to tell the story of the witch and walk round the tree in the middle of the ruins.

Originally a parish church, but later used as a chapel for the residents of Burnley Hall, the building fell into disuse during the 17th century. It is often said that centuries ago, a witch with a wooden leg was buried alive in St Mary’s and from her leg, a large oak tree grew and destroyed the church.Today the tree can be found growing in the middle of the original nave. Some believe that if you walk around the tree three times, the vengeful spirit of the witch will be released.

We stumbled across this ruin as we were doing a walk. It is really hidden away behind some trees and is covered in plants. Not fenced off at all and easily accessible from the small track we were walking on. Lovely to look around and it would make a great place to stop for lunch on a warm day. It would be nice to see a plaque or something with some information on the churches history and why it now lays in ruins. It is only a short walk from the village centre so I would recommend a visit if your in the area.
