The best customer service and food quality around York. Fully recommended. A perfect space for work remotely, enjoy with your child, reading, chilling and/or just meet with friends.

Great place for a coffee away from the tourists. Will definitely go again. Very well set up for small children with books and beanbags.

Hungate Reading Cafe
A lovely quiet cafe in the centre of York. Good range of cakes and traybakes to choose from, and lots of hot drink options too. I recommend the hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows - superb! The calming atmosphere was enhanced by no music playing in the background - this was ideal for neuro-divergent individuals like myself. Recommended!

Tucked away near trendy flats and student flats, this is a pleasant antidote to more commercial cafes, with a bookish community feel. Only tried the good white Americano this time, but hope to return to try snack and cake menu. Friendly lass on counter.

The best café in York for amazing vibes, good and well-priced coffee and the best warmest staff. This feels like being home but better - people are visibly happier when they walk out the door than when they come in and I believe this place has achieved a sort of magic. Also the toasties are very tasty!!

Visited in the middle of the day (1pm), with my toddler on a weekday and my experience may not be representative, so take this review with a pinch of salt.Lots of men working on laptops, so very quiet and industrious... which is great but not when you're bringing a toddler who wants to play in the play area. The coffee was good. The staff were ?bored?, but also not thrilled about being disturbed by taking my order... I was basically interrupting their chat.So not a great experience but as I said, almost certainly not representative

If it wasn't for the sign I wouldn't have noticed it. What a find! Simple and straight forward. Friendly and helpful staff. Great value. There was a good, light atmosphere. Example of a sandwich I was served. Absolutely will be coming again!

I normally enjoy coming here, but today had an unfortunate experience. The staff member who served me told me she was ill and kept coughing heavily (she had to step away from taking my order because she could not stop coughing). I ordered a drink and a croissant but did not feel comfortable drinking/eating them which was a waste of my money. I didn't say anything at the time so as not to embarrass her (she was very friendly and attentive), but I was disappointed to see that staff do not stay home when ill, or at least do not take the necessary safety/hygiene precautions.

Hungate Reading Cafe
Simply great! Customers are not on top of each other, kids have space to walk around, sleep, and of course read. There is a great selection of entertainment, food and the service was lovely. It’s off the beaten track, but definitely worth a visit into the city center
