The Mey Hotel

We stopped on a whim to get lunch at Heggies (the coffee stop at the Mey) and were delighted. Excellent food and coffee served in a cosy cafe setting. Lovely decor, and the music was right up my street.

We had lunch the food was really tasty and home made.The couple who owned it were lovely and so helpful.

Dog friendly hotel. The room in the courtyard had a double and single bed. Great shower. The wooded area behind the hotel is great for walking the dog.The evening meal was fantastic, and the service was excellent. Breakfast was just as good.

The owners were incredible. Nothing was too much trouble. We mingled easily with the other guests because of the atmosphere they created. Great food too !

A small privately owned hotel which didn’t look much from the outside but a fabulous welcome and cosy lounge dining area. The home cooked food was excellent and we were made to feel really welcome. The rooms were modern and very comfortable. Would highly recommend.

Dinner was nice, but ever so slightly overcooked, but still very nice. Would recommend. Never tried Mey Hotel before for food. Would go back.

Lovely rooms around a courtyard in beautifully converted outbuildings. Owners were great communicating through our ferry delays. Great night's sleep and a fabulous breakfast. Was a whistle stop stay but would definitely use the Mey as a base for exploring Caithness in the future.

This is a quality hotel. The proprietors are lovely and welcoming and the food is utterly delicious. (Chef wouldn't let me smuggle out a chicken and haggis, whisky spiked pie.) The clean, comfortable rooms to the rear of the hotel mean you can come and go freely without disturbing anyone. There's a lovely outdoor seating area next to short woodland walks. We will be back if possible because we completely love The Mey Hotel.

We went to the Mey Hotel for an evening meal, whilst staying at the nearby Granary. Of all the restaurants we visited on our trip, this is the one we talked about the most: but for all the wrong reasons unfortunately. We had booked a table at 8. During the afternoon we received a phone call saying that they could no longer accommodate us at 8 but at 6.30 instead. We should have cancelled but there are few other options in the area. This meant changing our plans for the afternoon and rushing back. As a result we were exactly TEN minutes late when we walked into the restaurant. I immediately apologised and the lady that met us then started to make a massive song and dance about accommodating us and that we wouldn’t be able to have a starter. I was so confused by this - I’ve never been treated in this way before. What was doubly strange was that we were one of only two couples dining. She then got the chef to come out who was similarly weird about our being ten minutes late. He grudgingly said it was ok and he’d do his best with a starter. At this point I was on the verge of walking out, however we had no other options for dinner so I kept my mouth shut. Unfortunately this made us feel absolutely dreadful for the entire meal. The food was ok: very basic stuff, I suspect quite a bit of it, including the soup for sure, was microwaved: pub fare really but with restaurant prices. Soggy chips, boiled veg, that kind of thing.After the massive drama about being ten minutes late, they then accommodated a walk in guest for a meal, about 15 minutes after we got there. Apart from her, the other couple and us, the restaurant was empty, so I remain utterly confused as to why we had to be made to feel so embarrassed in front of everyone in the bar and the other few diners.

Awesome place to be. The landscape is a blessing, sun rise and dawn are beautiful to look at and the nature around is pretty as well. You have nice possibilities for short and long trips with lovely rooms to stay in and nice personal. Visited that place four times over the last 20 years and it was always a pleasure.
