About the Business

Tinkinswood Burial Chamber | Cadw | A spectacular feat of prehistoric engineering This Neolithic (New Stone Age) tomb is topped with one of largest capstones in Britain. Measuring a massive 24ft/7m by 15ft/4.5m and weighing around 40 tons (as much as an articulated lorry), how on earth did the builders get it up there? Experts reckon that at least 200 individuals would have been required to hoist it into place. Excavations have uncovered the remains of over 50 people, along with broken pottery and flint tools.

The chamber is set off the small car park and across a couple of fields, so in wet weather, appropriate footwear is advisable. The burial chamber although small is amazing and steeped in history. Worth a visit especially if you live in the area.

I visited on a Friday, parking was no problem (there's room for maybe 5 cars), and the way is clearly signposted. The burial chamber is amazing. Just to visit something man-made from so many thousands of years ago! It's thought that Tinkinswood and St Lythans would have been visible from each other in the Neolithic and were paired". Well worth reading up on!"

One of the oldest man-made objects in Wales sits unassumingly in a field within an easy walk from St. Nicholas. In my opinion, it’s far more impressive than the nearby St. Lythan’s, with what is believed to be the largest capstone in Europe. A small fence surrounds it, as does a bench, making it a great spot for a picnic when taking on the Haunted Fields walk. The closing time is supposedly 4pm, but there’s nothing stopping you coming and talking a look after that time.

Beautiful location, lovely and quiet just the sound of the trees in the wind. Amazing to think it’s 6000 years old and check out the size of that cap stone!

We enjoyed a nice walk and visit to see this Neolithic burial chamber. We were the only visitors when we visited and the only car in the car park which made the visit very peaceful. We parked at the free car park (in a layby with space for around 5 cars and a rubbish bin). From the car park, you walk through the kissing gate and immediately turn left to follow the wooden sign directing you to the burial chamber. After a short walk through some fields and over a little wooden bridge you will see the burial chamber appear in front of you to the left on the pylon. The burial chamber is located in its own fenced-off grounds (accessed through another kissing gate) and is free to access, although there is a sign indicating that the gate is closed after a certain time. The burial chamber is shorter than many others of its kind but fairly wide. There is enough head height to just about be able to stand inside the burial chamber if you wished to do so but it does fill with water. There are a few signs near the site entrance with information about the burial chamber and a diagram of what it would have looked like in its day. There is also a bench here to sit and enjoy the view.We noticed several footpath markers near the burial chamber entrance for public footpaths within the Vale of Glamorgan.

Pleasant, quiet neolithic site. Maintained by Cadw. There is a seat to sit on. Suitable for a picnic in good weather.

Tinkinswood Burial Chamber
A fascinating Neolithic burial chamber situated 300 yards from a small car park on Duffryn Lane. The capstone is one of the largest in the UK and one can only wonder how it was put in place. The site is managed by Cadw and has been well restored after an excavation in 2011. It is a really tranquil place to visit in the beautiful Welsh countryside with plenty of nearby walks.

Much bigger than I expected. If you enjoy visiting old stone sites like me you'll love a visit here.Standing under the stone it's easy to feel past spirit at rest with its guardian watching over to keep them safe.Recommended to take a moment and just be 'still in the moment' while you're there. This was once a sacred spot.Respect should be shown.Wonderful that these stone monuments are still here to remind us of our pastThere is no fee to enter and walk around here. But closest carpark only has 3 spaces.
