This bridge, when first implemented, gave a very unique and futuristic look that compliments Newport, bringing more life to the area. However, the bridge has slowly gone into disrepair, looking absolutely filthy with dirt from over the years and generally looking more like an eyesore as time goes on.The bridge could still be great if more care was given to it.

Beautiful bridge, a shame that anything with wheels causes such a racket that all tranquility vanishes. You can also make some beautiful pictures from time to time here.

One of the iconic features of not only Newport but for UK. Specially Beautiful in night. Visitors definitely will enjoy it. Safe for kids also.

I enjoyed walking across. Quite muddy and dull day. The bridge was nice and wide so enough space for younger adults to whizz past on their scooters.

Looks unfinished like they forgot to take the crane away. Plus it’s really slippery when wet.

At first glance it may appear to be the single most over engineered footbridge in Britain. However, It's design is supposed to evoke and reflect the dockside cranes that once plied their trade on the banks of the Usk loading and unloading the ships that were the lifeblood of Newport's global mercantile trade. Coal, iron, steel and manufactured goods from the Gwent valleys and beyond to the world. It's elegant form is sure to catch your eye on a stroll along the rejuvenated river front. Its modern lines reflected in the new post modern University building and the Riverfront Theater. The opposite bank is lined with balconied appartments and more postmodernist architecture starkly contrasting with the pomp of Victorian Baroque in the Arts College and the 1960s concrete and steel Brutalism of George St Bridge. In evening light and with a high tide some interesting reflections can be played with for photography, at sunset the golden skies lend the bridge a stunning backdrop. At night it's floodlit and flourescent lighting make for shadows and reflections and make it stand out as an icon on the Usk.Next time you walk through Newport on a sunny day or clear evening, take a moment to admire a truly stunning piece of architecture in it's place, as you use it for its functional purpose of bridging the mighty Usk, think back to the history it evokes and imagine the scenes of ships lining the banks, the cranes at work, steam loco's shunting wagons of coal and goods. Reflect on the future and what the bridge may yet live to see.
