Quiet still restfull and cool

This particularly fine church was built during the first half of the 14th century and there have been little alterations since then. It gives a very good impression of English gothic architecture just before the advent of The Black Death. Internally it is equally splendid, not only for the architecture but in particular for it’s stained glass windows. The first group were installed whilst the building was going up to be augmented in the 16th century. The latter include designs derived from Holbein’s Whitehall Palace mural of Henry Vlll and his family. Also from this period comes the armorial glass from the Cave family who lives at Stanford Hall. Other notable features are the organ case made in 1630 and originally at Magdalen College Oxford and the fine monuments dating from the 16th to 19th century to members of the Cave family by such sculptors as Maximilian Colt, Westmacott and John Gibson RA.

Very disappointed to see the large padlock on the porch door. Two phone numbers were posted but neither answered. This was on a Wednesday early afternoon. I had come from Berkshire so a wasted journey. No website so didn't know this was a locked church.

A picturesque Church close to the river Avon county border with Leicestershire. Uniquely, St.Nicholas' Church, although located in Northamptonshire is within the Diocese of Leicester area. One of eleven Churches forming Avon-Swift Group of Churches, it has one Sunday Service each month accompanied by bell-ringing when possible. Level wheel-chair access, no pews, no toilet facilities, on-street/grass verge parking but please be aware of adjacent drives to nearby dwellings. The five bells sound reasonably well in harmony with each other. Anti-clockwise ground floor ringing layout.
