As an absolute geek when it comes to ocean liners, this was amazing.

The remains of the SS Great Eastern’s launch ramp. The ship was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to carry passengers and cargo between England and Australia. It was launched in 1858. The SS Great Eastern was the largest ship in the world at that time and it was constructed almost entirely of metal. It took 3 attempts attempts to get the ship into the water. There is an old informative panel but you can’t read anything.

Nice place with an amazing view towards Greenwich. The ramp itself puts your imagination to work and reading the poster makes you understand the story behind.

A really interesting place to visit, and the remaining slipway timbers and rails have been well maintained. The launch site is located just opposite the Malthouse Terrace Pier (serviced by Thames Clipper boats). The information board has also recently been updated by Tower Hamlets Council and makes for an interesting read.Work began on the SS Great Eastern in the spring of 1854 and was completed by November 1857. It was planned that the ship was to be launched sideways into the Thames as it was too long for a conventional launch. To support this sideways launch, Brunel had ordered the construction of two slipways into the Thames which would support the Great Eastern into the water, though it actually took four attempts and three months to finally get the ship, constructed almost entirely out of metal, into the water.

Very interesting history, but the information plaque at the site is so badly faded you cannot read it. You have to know what the history is before you visit or go with a tour guide.

It’s a collection of wood that’s believed to be the slipway for the SS Great Eastern but the info boards are faded so much you can’t read anything on them and there’s nothing here other than the wood and the view of the river.

I love this peaceful place. Adding history, It has a very calm place. I love to visit very frequently. You can see so many lovely pets fetching and playing. When just admiring nature, pets, and the river will ease your stress, and will forget the time passing by.
