About the Business

Passive Horsemanship Prestbury Cheltenham Gloucestershire | Brian has been a horseman and agriculturalist all his life and has been surrounded by horses and cattle for the past 69 years. From a family of horseman his experience is extensive having worked with many horses and their owners from starting, training, dealing with problem horses, training for competition to developing the most functional and adaptable working horses for agricultural tasks. Having travelled extensively throughout USA/Canada during his life Brian has met many a horsemen and is always the first to say “you never stop learning even at my age!” He teaches and practices his form of Passive Horsemanship an equitation which he has developed over the past 30 years. His approach is far more empathetic to both a horses mental and physical state and attains a level of control and natural movement through a passive invitation.

I had the privilege of having a 1:1 western riding/passive horsemanship lesson with Brian on-board his beautiful homebred quarterhorse, Arrow. Brian is a very interesting and knowledgeable instructor, who clearly adores his horses and he was very patient with me, a total beginner at western riding. He talked me through the correct way to meet a new horse, how to handle him and how to tack up with western tack. He seemed to have a lot of time for those who want to learn. Arrow is a very calm and well behaved horse, who made me feel like I was in safe hands! I highly recommend this experience!

Arranged to go trail riding with my 10 yr old granddaughter to make a special memory for her and it was something I always wanted to try. We are not novice riders. The horses are beautifully kept and in perfect condition, riding with Brian is a western experience not a quick get on ride and go like most others seem to be. He is very knowledgeable and takes riding his horses correctly very seriously which is refreshing. We had the best time ever and my granddaughter really liked him and is very keen to go again as soon as possible. Thanks Brian we loved it and your humour.

Lovely countryside hack Western style! Had a great afternoon. Collected horses from the field. Tacked them up and then rode them with great views over Cheltenham.

Always look forward to going for my riding lesson. The horses are all well behaved and have been well trained. There is a wonderful view across the valley towards the Malvern Hills. I have progressed to a gentle trot and thoroughly enjoy going.

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our Western Starter Session at the weekend.Brian's lifelong passion for cowboy equitation, extensive travelling, and decades of instructing experience were evident from the moment we arrived. He's interested and well-read in various other pairs to boot.I found his classroom style to be very gentile - as passive as his horsemanship, you might say. His ability to soften the blow of a large amount of information with intriguing and humorous storytelling made the learning process a pleasure, to say the least. However, Brian is no pushover when it comes to the practical lesson; he will ensure that, whenever you're on the horse, absolutely no bad habits creep in. He drills best practices into you pretty fast and doesn't seem to miss a thing. This is a benefit to both horse and rider, of course, and is ultimately what you're paying your hard earned money for. No messing. I appreciated his approach. We are both very keen to get back and build up to a trek up on the hills once we're able to pass a lope test. There may be a few more lessons to go before we get to that stage!
