We took a 90 mins tour starting here. Impressive to know the story of Southampton, the year the bargate was erected and its purpose. I truly enjoyed the history behind the monument and its importance on protecting the city.

A very nice 13th century (technically 12th century) sight to see. It's right between two shopping districts, so it's convenient to get to too.

This is an interesting site, but it's exactly what you see in the pictures: an ancient gate from the old city walls that has been preserved within the town. It's free and interesting, but expect to spend just a few minutes here on your way to other activities.

Beautiful and still standing. The lions of the Bargate are here to stay! However, around it the transformation is taking place. Not sure if it's going to be a positive or a negative outcome. We shall see!

Southampton is a truly historic city. A city full of gateways and monuments. Built around 1180, Bar Gate is said to be the finest gateway in England. The name Bar Gate came from the fact that the toll broker used to block the area with the bar for the mandatory toll collection. The place was used as a jail and a court. The bar gate was later split from the long wall as it caused a traffic block. See where Jane Austen is believed to have lived. Then we crossed Bugle Street and French Street and on the High Street we saw the hotel where food was prepared for the Titanic. Now it is Bayleaf Restaurant serving Indian cuisine.

Pretty rundown area. Needs a bit of life put into it. To many sleepers in doorways. It's about time society started taking more interest in helping these people and getting them into proper accomodationIt's a very, very sad situation but it needs a lot of help from the local authorities to improve the attraction for tourists & those suffering in this way.

Good connection between London and Southampton. Over one hours train or National express bus. Went there and stayed over the night. Nice city and good shopping center. Good night life, plenty of pubs and restaurant. Highly recommended to visit this city.
