Ann Louise and Thistle Wool Shop

My mum and I popped in to pick up some new wool for a couple of Christmas hats she was making and the selection was amazing. Considering the size of the store they have managed to pack in soo much without it seeming cluttered or disorganised. When we couldn’t quite decide the lady’s who run the store where very helpful and also had some stock in the back to add to the selection. If you are the kind of person who likes to look at/ feel your wool before for purchase I would definitely recommend coming here. The prices seemed reasonable as well so a win win.

Claire, Kate, Jeanie, Serena and Dorothy are the most warm and welcoming staff you could ever meet. The knowledge these ladies have is vast and they seem to always be able to help. It's like Google in the flesh!The classes are fantastic. I have learned to quilt, use various embroidery techniques. Improve on my knitting and crochet skills.This shop is a goldmine of fabrics, yarn, patterns for knitting, crochet and sewing. If a project uses needles, hooks or thread/yarn the shop more than likely has it.Highly recommend classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced crafters. Support is available for all. Designated beginners classes are run frequently. Now this may not be an issue to majority, however as I live with 2 left handed people I know how crafts and daily tasks appear to be geared towards a right handed society. I have witnessed left handed people master crochet and become very accomplished because of Claire and Kate's teaching abilities.

Great service in this shop.... Great selection too. I don't live in Portsmouth, but make a bee line for it when I stay. Wish there was a shop like this near me.

By far and away the best wool shop in town and beyond. Always really helpful, and I can be annoying not really knowing what it is my fiancée needs. They are chatty with me and my kids and help out as much as they possibly can. Highly highly recommend this lovely little local shop

This shop has a wide range of wools etc. But they are not warm and friendly. Unfortunately they get away with it because it is the only wool shop around (copnor road). They are expensive as well. They make money out of a team knitting for them. But over the years they have taken advantage of wool shops closing and get away with rudeness. But there is always hobbycraft and ordering on line now. They just want your money. Previous owner much better.

As someone interested in getting into the hobby, the lady behind the till was incredibly unhelpful and blunt to the point of being rude. A more experienced knitter/crocheter may have a better time.

The ladies are very knowledgeable and friendly. Always happy to help when you're new to a project too. Can't say enough good things about this local shop, go and see for yourself :)

Exceptionally rude shop owner. She screamed and shouted at me when I politely asked if I could look at something. Frankly her response was unreal, either she was having an exceptionally bad day or she is unstable for some reason. Either way despite having used this shop for about 10 years they will no longer be receiving my custom.

Ok, it's covid time but I went in wanting to find wool for a couple of projects. Kept being hollared at by the owner had I finished yet and made to feel very uncomfortable. Last time I go in there as sick of the rudeness. Lady in there buying buttons was spoken to in rude manner. Seeded in Albert Road so much friendlier, further for me but worth it.
