We have just had an extension completed by South London Lofts. This is the second time we have used them; they built our loft in 2016. They are a very honest and hardworking group of guys; we cannot fault their workmanship. The on-site builders were very respectful, each night they left the building site clean, tidy and secure.South London Lofts were so impressive when they built our loft, in 2016, that we knew when we were ready to get our extension, we would use them again. We did get a couple of quotes and South London Lofts were very competitive. Craig visited us on both occasions and went through the plan, outlining any additional costs we need to consider, this is made very clear and we were grateful, as they are not always apparent when you are thinking of have building work. Sergio our Project Manager was absolutely lovely, he always answered my calls and kept me well informed of each stage, he even helped us out on a few occasions, once when my son took the radiator off and our heating stopped, he sent a plumber immediately, at no extra cost. The quality of our build is amazing, we cannot fault it, we simply love the outcome. I would most definitely use them again and I would highly recommend them.

We live in Tooting and we had seen South London Lofts working locally over the years, we needed to get our loft converted and got them in to quote. They were very informative and I was impressed with their system and the speed that things progressed, from the design & drawings stage through to getting the work started. Our conversion is just what we needed for our family. Many thanks again for a great job.

After seeing quite a few builders we chose South London Lofts. They were clear about the process, answered all our questions and they offered a good price. What sealed it for us was seeing a few of the jobs they had already done. One was done a good while back, which we wanted to see so we could see how the quality of the work stood up over time, and the other had just been finished a few days earlier and is a couple of streets from us. The people there told us how they had had very positive experiences of their build, and we could see ourselves the quality of everything. We have a mid-terrace 1930’s house now with a dormer loft conversion that gives us a very large bedroom, off which is a good sized shower room and toilet. We also made sure we had decent sized under eaves storage area for all the stuff like camping gear and Christmas stuff etc. It has a lovely wide and light stair up to it that just looks like a continuation of the original stair to the first floor, it matches it perfectly. 3 velux windows and French windows/doors at the back. There is a very high quality of finish all round and we are very happy with it all.I work from home, so I got to see a lot of the work as it progressed. The builders were always polite and considerate over things like minimising the dust that might come down into the house, which only happened once the stair hole was made. When they made the hole they put down protection for the stair below and hung drapes and neatly contained the mess. After that as there was some people traffic up through the house to the loft they put down protective plastic on the carpets up to the loft which when it was taken up revealed the carpets in the same condition they were in before the work began. We asked, during the build, for some extra work to be done – for instance I could see, when I went up and looked out the new Velux windows, that the parapet of the party wall, above the level of the tiled roof, between ourselves and our neighbour was in a bad state. The bricks looked like very bad tooth decay and not going to last, so I had that fixed and I had the front bays very tired roof felt redone. Both were done again to very high standard, the wall looks great, and the price was very fair. Any extra things we wanted were always very reasonably priced and it was always given very straight-forwardly, which I liked. This extended to things like a number of extra sockets, aerial sockets and deciding to have downlights in the 1st floor landing and bathroom below. The electricians were great both they and the plumber/bathroom fitters took the time to check and double check we were getting what we wanted, exactly where we wanted it. The plumbers handled the fittings we’d bought with the utmost care, careful not to scratch or mark anything - they were very sweet guys.We had an occasion when it looked like, because of the way the roof was constructed in one place, we might not be able to have the size of window in the stairwell we wanted, and that it might not be lined up how we wished. The lead first-fix carpenter was great, he said to leave it with him and then he came the next day with a solution and he was able to position it perfectly central between the stair well walls. Other things they took in their stride included how we wanted the Velux windows fitted, with a narrow engineered wooden bar that Velux provide, so windows could be close together and you maximise head height. The plasterer deserves a mention too, as he made these beautiful curves in the bedroom ceiling where the flat ceiling curves down to the sloping one. And he did this lovely curve of plaster work under the new stair, that you pass under when you go down to the ground floor. The roofers too did a great job, with real attention to detail with the flashings, everything.I’ve attached some pictures, so you can see something of what they did for us.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!SLL did a loft conversion for my nextdoor neighbour by bracing scaffolding against my house without my permission or consent. This caused damage to my brickwork and gutters. I repeatedly phoned and wrote emails asking SLL to remove scaffolding off my house, as they had trespassed several times and I could see no protection was afforded to my house as they did not use any safety equipment such as end caps, netting, brick guards etc. The company manager is clearly uneducated, rude, lacking customer service skills and needs to go back to school judging by his responses to my emails. SLL did not remove the scaffolding until all exterior works were finished. I am now taking them to small claims court.

The only positive thing I can say is that the build itself was fast. While we have achieved a good finished product, that is at the cost of a lot of blood, sweat and tears from us, and an immense amount of stress. As pointed out by other reviewers, you pay the initial deposit to South London Lofts and then they hand you off to sub-contractors. We were clear upfront that we had never done anything like this before and were assured that the project manager would tell us everything we needed to know.South London Lofts quotes it’s service aim as giving “you the best loft conversion speedily built and to the highest of quality, for a competitive price & to make the process as painless as possible.” For us, we took this to mean that the project manager would explain what decisions we had to make by when and what the options were; to possibly make suggestions if things would work better another way; to be a conduit between the trades to make sure they delivered what we asked for; and to perform some level of quality control. This was absolutely NOT what we experienced.A summary of the issues we had:- The balcony and windows were all doubled in size without communicating this to us at all to check if it left us enough wall space and to consider implications for heat loss etc.- During the initial sales meeting we were shown a clay tile and given the name of the colour as an example of the tiles included in the price - when it came to choose tiles, we were told only concrete tiles were included and clay was extra.- When we indicated that we would get other quotes for roofing we were told that using other tradespeople would invalidate our warranty with South London Lofts.- When we raised concerns a few weeks in about the complete lack of communication and misleading info about tiles we received a strong-arm response effectively saying that if we weren’t happy they could take all the builders off the job and we can find another builder knowing full well that would be next to impossible.- There were generally no plans/drawings to record our decisions and when considerable errors were made (e.g. wrong size shower) we were told we must have forgotten what we agreed to. Similarly we were charged extra for work we didn’t ask for, approve or want and had to fight to have the charges removed, being told over and over that we had agreed to the work.- The project manager’s response to a lot of our questions was a shrug and roll of the eyes. For example, we asked the project manager for dates of when the plastering/roofing would finish so we could organise exterior painting, joinery and tiling to start. The response was a shrug and roll of the eyes “I don’t know, ask the roofer.” We had to really press for an estimated date.- When we pointed out that e.g. the plastering was of very poor quality and would need considerable patching the response was a shrug, roll of the eyes and words to the effect of “you can’t get good tradespeople these days.”- We saw the project manager approximately once in the last four weeks of the build and only because we specifically asked him to come - he had gone on holidays.- Most of the tradespeople spoke little to no English so communication was very difficult.- The fittings used e.g. lights and power sockets are very cheap and they look it.- It took weeks and weeks for the scaffolding to finally be removed.- The house was absolutely filthy throughout the build. I think they probably gave it a quick clean once or twice. Otherwise we had to clean up regularly including taking a lot of building debris outside to be collected and constantly sweeping up nails outside front and back.- We had considerable damage to our front hedge from the tube for the rubble, and also had damage to our front foot path from the scaffolders smashing the scaffolding boards on the ground - this was patched but it looks terrible.- Rubble was left for long periods in our front courtyard including wet plaster.

Can't say enough good things about this company. They started the loft in April and finished it in July. The delays were caused by the difficulties in getting materials due to lockdown and the shortage of delivery drivers following brexit. Our loft was finished to a high standard with the project manager offering money saving advice as well as advice on ascetics and design. He answered our queries in a speedy manner and checked in regularly! This room and bathroom have become my sanctuary. Thanks guys!

We chose South London lofts as they had done a good job for a competitive price for our neighbours. They did an excellent job - they were quick and we liked that they had lots of experience doing our kind of house so they didn't ask us to make lots and lots of decisions.. It was all very easy! Since having the loft done nearly 7 years ago we have had a couple of minor problems and they have come back quickly and sorted them out with no cost. We would definitely recommend them.
