We stayed at the hotel as a way of breaking our journey from the south coast to the Lake District, and we were not disappointed. Lovely setting for this period building in the Shropshire countryside. Exterior space is delightful. For our two stays we had rooms in the main building and these were well appointed, the privilege junior suite at the top of the house was great with separate sitting room and oak beamed ceiling. Interior space was most agreeable with a good bar - only disappointment was the lack of Gordons Gin and Schweppes Indian Tonic water. The Dining Room had great atmosphere, we particularly liked the oak panelling and the warm lighting during dinner. Good menu and unlike so many British restaurants we were given bread before our evening meal. There was a wide range of choice for breakfast. There were some errors in our bill when it came to check out but these were resolved. One problem was that service charges and tips both appeared as tips on the bill and so we are not sure how the hotel separates the two items.

We were impressed with the high level of staff service and quality of food especially our evening meal. The dining room and adjoining rooms within the dining room wing were magnificent. The grounds were beautiful and staff were lovely. The room was clean and spacious, however the mattress did not feel new. It felt like a comforter was missing and the bathroom was dominated by pulls and handles and support equipment. High toilet, bath handles etc . Although immaculate there were areas in the bathroom requiring maintenance. Certainly very much catering for the disabled person and we are not disabled in any way and we had booked to mark our second wedding anniversary. We were a little disappointed that our room view featured the car park at the back of the building. There were many areas in the spa in need of maintenance. In the steam room tiles were missing from an area within the seat highlighted by a yellow warning triangle. The heater in the sauna was very noisy thus hindering the ability for a total relax. The pool was too busy to be able to either swim properly or relax. The whirl pool was crowded so we didn't even get a chance to experience that. There was rubbish in the ladies changing rooms and the bins were overflowing and on seeing this it didn't make me feel very confident regarding the general standard of hygiene in the spa in general. I think if our room and the spa had been a little more luxurious we would certainly consider booking another time.

Good location a few minutes from Shrewsbury town centre. Good size, nicely decorated room. Nice food, although didn't have all items on the small menu. Decor in main hotel a little tired. Will stay again.

We had a wonderful 1 night stay. The bedroom was a great size, bed was comfy and big, bathroom was clean and reasonably sized, room was very warm upon arrival. The spa facilities were ideal, it was quite quiet when we went so had the comfy beds to ourself, the first jacuzzi I’ve been to that was actually HOT. Pool was small but decent for relaxing. The grounds were nice. Lots of choice at breakfast, bit over cooked but I personally prefer it that way. 15 minute drive from Shrewsbury town centre. Loads of parking. For the price just over £100 for the night it was ideal, will definitely be going back.

The hotel has maintained the history of the building. Having travelled around the UK for business purposes in the past. Yes it ticked all the boxes if that was the case. This time we were there for an overnight break away.Like many business based companies the personal touch is lacking. However the hotel was not busy.Unfortunately this was also reflected in the higher prices.Probably primarily, due to the ongoing economic concerns throughout the UK. These concerns are with all businesses and their customers alike.

Staff very helpful and location great but the hotel does not live up to its 4 star rating. We were on a 4 night stay and were staying in a Standard Double room in the annex. The room was relatively clean but let down by being extremely tatty with damaged paintwork, black mould on the bath and shower fittings, mastic jointing pulling away from walls and in some small areas black mould showing, damaged furniture and worn clothes storage cupboard.Items that should have been provided (according to their standard room specification) were not provided without me having to request them each day of our stay.We ate in the restaurant and whilst breakfast was great the evening meal was generally let down by being only lukewarm rather than hot.The hotel is advertised as a Spa hotel - unfortunately the Spa was not working for the duration of our stay with what appeared to be no serious attempt by the hotel to rectify it.

Food - excellent quality and beautifully presented with an interesting menu. Daytime sandwiches were a delight with quality fillings and a lovely side salad. The evening meal was beautifully presented and perfectly cooked.Staff - The receptionist and restaurant staff were professional, friendly and accommodating. However, a member of staff in the bar was rude by ignoring me when I went to order drinks and food at lunchtime, leaving me waiting for someone to come and serve me. The fire door in the bar area kept opening with the wind and staff had difficulty securing it. Staff at the Spa in need of fire evacuation training and generally how to speak with customers. Whilst in the pool the fire alarm went off and as no staff came to advise those in the spa area, we wrapped towels around us and went, bare foot, to the Spa reception to find out. Poor response from staff regarding what to do. The fire alarm went off 10 minutes later and everyone stayed in the pool, again no clear message from staff as to what to do.Hotel - lovely grand old property. The Oak Room restaurant, whilst in need of a freshen up decor wise, had a lovely grandiose presence about it. Room 71 had a king size bed with lovely bedding, very comfortable sofa and pleasant views over the lake. Had difficulty getting the TV to work. The bathroom was big with a large walk in shower and extra large bath. Downside was the blue bottle flies that kept coming in through the extractor vent (a problem not dealt with by the hotel due to maintenance having gone home at 5pm). Lovely hot water in the evening but not in the morning (perhaps due to everyone using it at the same time). The fire alarm went off again at 3.30am and guests gathered in the corridor but with no instructions from staff we all went back to bed. I did check out the window to the car park which was the gathering point in case of a fire and no staff or other guests were present. Next morning we woke to a note from management saying our safety is their top priority and thanked guests for their patience but no apology or real explanation as to why the fire alarm had not been dealt with in the daytime, which it certainly should have been the hotel's priority so guests would not be disturbed during the early hours of the morning.

Our experience was wonderful from start to finish. Courteous staff from reception to the restaurants. Booked it for my husband's birthday, lovely touch of chocolates were left in our room. The hotel was spotless and beautifully decorated ready for Christmas. Great food at dinner and breakfast. So pleased to have found this gem, will be sure to come again!
