Hotel is ok but not worth the money. Location is incredible but could really do with somewhere to at least unload and load you car as the carpark is a 5 minute walk. Staff were obviously struggling and understaffed, we often couldn't find anyone but they were always pleasant and helpful when we could find someone. Reception was often not staffed and nobody was answering the phone. Bar staff again were trying their best but just under supported and not fully trained.

This review is for the Cellar “restaurant” at the Judge’s Lodging — which is made out to be a great, cozy restaurant with traditional English fare on the website — but is actually one of the most mediocre meals I’ve had.First, the service was atrocious. It was a miracle if we could even lay eyes on a server once every half hour. I ate half my steak with no drink because I couldn’t hail someone down. Second, the atmosphere is very blah. Feels like a bunch of separated small rooms (which is probably why the servers can’t see you half the time). Not festive. Not playing fun music. Nothing. Third, half the options for food weren’t even available when we came in at 7pm on a Tuesday: no steak pot pie, no vegetable pie, no duck, no paella, etc. Fine, ok — we figured some things out. A tasteless parsnip soup, an equally tasteless (and weirdly mushy) duck and leek terrine, and a charred ribeye that tasted burnt without looking like it (speaks to a charred grill that hasn’t been cleaned). Won’t be back.Want a good steak? Go to the Whippet Inn. This place is a disgrace.

Beautiful hotel in a very central setting. Very clean and comfortable. The cellar bar had a great atmosphere and the food was delicious. Breakfast was bountiful and the staff were extremely friendly. Special thanks to Kasha who was absolutely amazing and went above and beyond during our stay.

Beautiful hotel in a great location in the downtown York area. Great restaurant and overall service.Only heads up is that there is no close parking and the road in front is not open during most of the day, so if arriving by car there is a long walk, about 8-10 minutes through a lovely park, from the recommended carpark to the hotel.

We stayed in room 11 Clinton - right at the end, felt lovely and private and it's a massive room, with a seating area and big bathroom with a shower and separate jacuzzi bath. Lovely and clean, queen size bed was lovely and fab amenities like a fan, iron etc and nice fluffy towels. The white company soaps are a lovely touch. Shower base is a bit wobbly in the middle for some reason! Reception staff lovely. Amazing location literally bang in the centre close to everything - can't find a better location honestly. Lovely bar and restaurant for drinks. Breakfast is nice, service for breakfast was OK, but you kind of feel a bit forgotten about - no one checks in if you need anything once you have your food ; no coffee or juice refills etc. You have to go find someone. All in all, still a fab stay would come again

The Judge's Lodging was a really great place to stay, highly recommended! The room we stayed in was separate from the main building which was very handy for access at all hours. The room was very comfortable and a good size, with a sofa and a coffee machine (with a good range of flavour capsules to choose from) alongside the usual choices of tea bags. The bathroom was huge with a very spacious shower - all set up so it could also be used as a wet room for those with mobility issues. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble for them to help with. We didn't try the main restaurant but the Cellar Bar was great for drinks and food, and reasonably priced.

Great place to stay, rooms are modern while still maintaining the historic feel of the hotel. Comfortable beds. Both of the hotels restaurants were top notch.Only complaint was the noise level at night. Very loud, but to be expected given the location.

My visit was to The Cellar Bar and it’s outdoor dining patio. A lovely setting right in the heart of historic York. Perfect for enjoying a drink and a meal with fresh air and loads of people watching.I chose the classic British pub dish of Fish & Chips and I wasn’t disappointed. Crispy and flaky fish with delicious tartar sauce and skin-on chips. The minty & mushy peas were subpar unfortunately. The half pint of Berry Cider was tart and refreshing and paired well.My main reason for a 4-star rating is the very lax service. It was hard to get the attention of staff at the bar and on the patio. I ordered my drink other the QR code plaque on the table mainly to get staff over to me to request a menu. The server was quite friendly thereafter. Just have patience and O think the experience will be positive. I’m American, so I’m used to more service than seems normal here in the UK.Service
