The Minster Gate Bookshop

Amongst the best bookstores I've ever been to, if not the best, The Minster Gate offers a great variety of books on history, nature, archaeology, psychology, literature, theology and the occult, to name a few. Second hand and new books, all in great condition and they all come at amazingly reasonable prices! A real gem for all bookworms that beats the commercialisation of everything in our era. You should definitely not skip a visit if you visit York and you're a book lover. I left with six books and I paid around £23.

This is probably the best book store I have seen in my life! I can find literally every book here, and they come with great price! I didn't plan to buy anything but ended up with 3 books and a tote bag! I love the smell of the books and the way they place books even on the staircase, which makes me feel I am in a fairy tale library. The book store matches very well with the image of York, a small city with alleys full of surprises!

If you are a book lover you are going to adore this place. It has a variety of different genres to pick from over several floors. The best part is that the books are cheap so you can purchase five books for the price of two at normal stores. One of my favourite stores in York.

You don't realise how much this place has jam packed in until you step inside. The street is also easily missed as your gaze will usually be caught by the grandeur of York Minister.The shop was tidy and clean, which cannot be said for the other bookshops we visited while in York.

It’s a nice bookshop right next to the church. It has several floors and each floor sales different genres of book. Some books has modern cover but some are vintage. I find it is interesting they have loads of books have interesting or uncommon titles. I prefer the old books that published in last century which are still so well preserved. They are definitely collectible and the prices are amazingly cheap! Each room and the staircase might be a bit too narrowed but it is an old building so understandable. I do recommend book lovers to come here. You will not be disappointed.

Quite possibly the finest second-hand bookshop in England, if not beyond. I spent some five hours on 18 September 2023 browsing the recent acquisitions section alone, which is the real strength of this incredible shop. I think I would need a week properly to browse the whole shop. Helpful and knowledgeable staff in Caroline, Lindsay and the owner, Nigel. The footfall in this shop is incredible, as tourists, local enthusiasts and students literally pour in at certain times of the day. The intimate size of the rooms, especially on the ground floor, encourages .discourse with fellow shoppers, who typically come here from all corners of the planet. There are also beautiful maps and prints available to add to one’s browsing pleasure. For any lover of books, this shop is Nirvana, or as close as one can get to it. Absolute joy to visit and a fitting bookshop for the incredible and beautiful medieval city of York. This is the bookshop jewel in the crown of English cities.

The most amazing book store and certainly second hand book store I have ever been to. It is a very historical building - the store itself is very narrow and tall. The basement has a lot of overstock books from other stores that you can buy for £3.99 each !!!! You can buy anything from classics to non fiction. An amazing store that I hope stays open forever.

Always have a pleasant visit here, the bargain basement is beyond reasonable, you'd struggle to beat the prices in any charity shop and for well known books this is unbelievable. If you're an avid reader, your wallet will appreciate it!
