Friendly staff, great pies and the best pool table I've played on in a long time. Well worth the membership fees - cheers!

Founded in 1877 as a reading room for local men, this club moved to its current location in 1967. At present only men may become members but women as well as men are welcome to visit as guests, and a number - mostly wives or girlfriends - do.The club carries a selection of well-kept real ales as well as lager, cider, wines and a good range of spirits, liquers and modern alcoholic delights. The billiards and snooker tables are among the best in the county, and there is also a well-patronised skittle alley. The club shows live sports events on TV, and international rugby matches involving England are particularly popular! The club has recently launched social events with live entertainment on the first Saturday evening of each month.Although the club is limited by its 1960s architecture it is well-appointed, professionally run and extends a warm welcome to strangers.

Declaration of Interest: I'm the Vice-President!The club's been going since 1877 though in its present building a mere 50 years. The clubhouse is classic Working Men's 1960s but is comfortable inside with a main bar equipped with two excellent snooker tables and a dartboard. There's also another bar with a skittle alley. The club sells a range of beers (including cask conditioned ale) and ciders, well kept and far cheaper than in local pubs, plus a good range of wines, spirits, etc. Food is limited to pickles, crisps, etc.Guests of both genders are welcome but if you like it enough to want to come regularly you need to become a member (currently all of £15 a year and gentlemen only!)
