Would never use these again. My daughter paid to rent a Ford Fiesta online. Paid the rental that was requested. Went to collect the car 2 days later was told no fiestas available and also she had to pay an extra £200 to take the car out of the garage. We paid the £200 straight away for her as she could not afford to pay this hidden extra. Told the £200 would be paid directly back into her account, still waiting for this to happen. Other people were also complaining in there. Really bad service. Do they not realise people need there money back straight away as a £200 deposit to take the car out of the garage is a lot of money to pay out.

Staff are good, however the company itself is shocking. They book rental slots without consideration for return times from other customers; ended up waiting five hours for my booked van.

Shockingly bad .atranged to have car delivered today but got a voicemail thismorning saying they dont have any cars available..!!? Tried calling back they dont answer the phone .thanks avis for ruining my weekend.worst ever dont bother

I am very disappointed with Avis Car Hire at Msida Malta. I was in Malta from the 17th to the 24th of March 2014. Prior to going I hired and paid for a car for that week from an agent in UK. The hand over at Luqa airport went well although arrival time in the early hours does allow one to inspect the car. However, I checked it over in day light the very next morning and noticed all the imperfections I was made to sign for on arrival when I also paid for the tank of petrol and the late arrival fee.The car was running well until the morning of the 22nd when it broke down on me. Very inconvenient for not only am I a pensioner but I also had my 88 year old mother in the car too. After sometime Avis sent a towing truck to us but no way could I get an elderly mother up in the front. So a car was sent to pick us up and took us to the Office/Garage at Msida. So far all well and good. After a while at the office, having given up a half day of my holiday I was given a replacement car for the last 2 days. It became clear the breakdown was due to clutch failure. I was not made aware at the time that I was going to be held responsible for the damage. So needless to say I was surprised to find an amount of over £400 on my American Express Card From MBNA. I wrote to Avis in Malta but got no response so I placed my concerns with MBNA who has been trying to dispute this transaction on my behalf. Likewise MBNA are not having much luck. I go to Malta at least once a year as apart of having been born there but came to England 46 years ago, I also have a holiday apartment there. If this dispute is not settled in my favour, I will not be hiring cars from Avis again. As far as I am aware, a clutch comes under wear and tear, more so on hired cars as these are used by several drivers over years and thousands of miles. I did very few miles in those 5 days as I do not go to Malta as a tourist but to see family. I have been driving for 44 years and never had a clutch fail me Avis should endeavour to make sure any franchise abroad is being honest with its customers

Although booking was taken online and paid for, the manager refused to hire vehicle when visiting office for reasons that he would not say. Thoroughly disappointed. Please be warned.

After you return the vehicle, they will continue to use your bank account like a piggy bank, dipping into it whenever they feel like it. Checked my account recently and they've been taking money for absolutely no reason. I'm reporting it to my bank and getting them blocked from stealing any more. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. You have been warned.

There are always customers arguing with the rep at the front desk. Availability of cars is less and hence more of cancellations. If you booked online, the refund takes like ages.

Avis website is terrible. Last night I tried to extend my van hire for another day and had to hold on to the operator for an hour on one occasion. I did have to phone back three times to try and secure the van. Each time I was told there was a glitch with the system. It appears Avis use Internet Explorer and not their on database. In the end, after my card was declined three times, I was told the van had been booked for the extra time but the extra monies would have to be made at the desk when collecting. Update will be Saturday.Update.At least I collected the correct size van which was perfect. Unlimited mileage and a full tank of fuel as well. All you do is top up when returning. Other quotes were a bit cheaper but charged per mile over a certain total.To finalise, AVIS need to sort out their online booking system.
