Bishops Nympton Primary School
I walked to school with my mother on my first day in September 1942. She left her bike at a stand of trees about half a mile from the school, up the hill from Bish Mill. That was not the only thing I did not understand over the next 6 years. Mrs Boundy's domino cards - which we were invited to be the first to add up add up, always left me thinking. John Goss got 5 and 6 first on one occasion, and marked himself as having a future. (Forensic scientist, Bristol, against photographer, London (me).Martin Fry was brain No. 2 at this school, but his father had marked him to inherit the farm. Apparently I was No.3, and since only 2 of us were allowed to go to the local grammar school, I was lucky indeed to take Martin's place. I blame being born in August for being a year behind. I did the first year at Barnstaple Boys' Grammar School twice. That helped, but not much. However I am pleased to rate BNPS with 5 stars. Julia Winters was the beauty of this school, and only had to walk across the road to get there. I wonder how she did.
