we have used Martin on many occasions over the last 6 years and always found him to be professional and competant in everything that he has done everything has always been done to top specification and would recommend him to anyone , ignore the negative review totally unbelievable in our opinion you will definately not be disappointed in anything Martin of Retro Tile does for you so call him today

Unreliable, untrustworthy, brazen and incompetent is how I would describe Martin Gothard. He was hired in the summer of 2016 primarily to rectify the work of another gas engineer who, among other things, had left CO spilling into the living room from his attempt to fit a fireplace. He identified the faults, met with the gas inspector and claimed to be a stickler for the building and a perfectionist, so I hired him given his positive reviews also. He was due to complete by end Sept 2016. He started but then came the excuses: his health and family issues slowing him down. This went on until the new year when I challenged him further about the the delays and the quality of his work. Not longer after he left the job claiming to have finished and demanding payment (March 2017). However, the boiler he installed and claimed to be legal and reconditioned turned out to be 10 years old and illegal, as well as being installed incorrectly. The gas fire he installed had been done improperly and was unsafe. There was also a dangerous gas leak and there were also issues with the tiling and joinery work he had done. He knew the work was defective because he failed to notify to building control and entered the wrong make and model and the landlord's gas safety certificate. As well as attempting to charge me as if the work was done properly, he also inflated the invoice, and there were issues with the tiling and joinery work too. I also discovered, that instead of working on my job, he had been working elsewhere and dumping the the waste at my property: poo stained toiler and toilet parts, showers, fireplace, rubble, flooring, etc. He refused to meet on site to discuss, and then failed to acknowledge any of the issues when put in writing, simply demanding to be paid.I don't think I have ever written such a negative review about a tradesman, but people need to know about this fellow. Avoid at all costs, and don't give him any keys!Update: Another reviewer has said not to believe my review, so I have uploaded the relevant pages from the Gas Safe inspector's report. Things were that the inspector had to cap the gas supply there and then, and then had to make a RIDDOR report to the Health & Safety Executive.Also, if you are wandering why my review is not on the St Helens Trader register website, it is because St Helens Trading Standards censor all negative feedback and do no accept complaints about fee paying members of the Trader Register. I have a letter from Mike Palin, the council Chief Executive, admitting that not a single complaint about members has been recorded on their database even though dozens have people have attempted to leave negative feedback, all of which have been censored. Just try and find a negative review on there about any trader, I challenge you! I will also add that between Sept 2016 and Mar 2017 when my job was delayed because Mr Gothard claimed first to be laid up in hospital and then to be working on my job exclusively, he managed to continue to get reviews at the same rate. Interesting, isn't it?Of course, I am not saying that all members of the Trader Register are like Mr Gothard. I'm sure there are very good tradespeople on there, but if they are not weeding out and being open and honest about the bad ones it doesn't help consumers find the good ones.
