Duncansby Head Graffiti

This is a nice little slice of art that draws on local maritime history, the 1976 beaching of the Duncansby Head nearby at The Groyne. (For those interested, the ship was undamaged and thankfully no one was hurt). It provides a nice and much-needed splash of colour in the back streets of the Westoe area, and for those who have seen the original photo, adds a fresh re-imagining and enlivening of history. Although it may only occupy a momentary glance in the business of your day, it is at least a pleasant one. It’s a shame there is not more of its like around the town - perhaps one day!Like the previous reviewer, I’d like to know more about the artist’s intent. Were they an admirer of the photo? Present at the event? Making a point? Wanting art that reflected the town? Nevertheless, in itself, it is a fine thing to walk by.

A unique find within South Shields! I walk past this Graffiti almost every day and I like it’s unique colour scheme which really brings to life the culture of this coastal town and it’s ship building roots.It would benefit if we got to know the name of the paintings creator or even his motivation behind it. What inspired its creature? Who are the people within the shadows of the boat? It’s sad that we might never know the answers to such a thought provoking piece of Shields arts!Finally, there isn’t much to be done once you have seen this graffiti. Yes it looks nice on your photo stream but after that you kind of just leave it.

Lovely artwork done by a very talented artist

Absolutely stunning piece of art work! The creator of the piece is Frank Styles. He created it based off a picture of The Duncansby Head which was beached in South Shields.
