We were regular customers up to moving house some 8 years ago, and always enjoyed excellent quality fish & chips etc. We have recently returned to the area and were keen to sample them again. The first couple of visits were every bit as good, but since then the quality has been unreliable. Our last visit in early May was more than disappointing - my partner could not eat his meal - soggy batter, strange taste to fish, mediocre chips. The home made Italian icecream continues to be delicious, but we won't be ordering f&c again . Service can be a little slow at busy times.Since the original review, the cafe has been refurbished to provide a take out service only. The cooking is now done by the owners rather than staff, and the quality had gone up tenfold as a result. Always good quality, well-cooked, and very pleasant, helpful service. Well worth a visit!

It was a Sunday (when most chip shops are shut) and' fancying fish and chips we read the previous reviews of Central Cafe and decided to head there. The staff were friendly and the fish and chips were among the best I had tasted. My eldest daughter is a vegetarian and in the past it has been hard to find things for her to have with her chips at other similar eateries. For example in Yorkshire earlier this year she just had to have a bag of chips as there was nothing else which did not contain either meat or fish. Myself and my wife had fish and chips, my youngest daughter had the sausage and chips children's meal and my eldest had the veggie burger. After getting our meals (it was busy but after we paid the staff brought the food out to us in the car) we drove to the Isle of Whithorn and had our food overlooking the sea. They also have a slush machine which was a bonus as we all love a slush, especially in the summer. They had strawberry and raspberry (with mixes of the two available). They also had a variety of chocolate bars available at reasonable prices and sold ice cream. If you are in this part of south Scotland (Newton Stewart / Wigtown), pay this chippy a visit. Great tasty food and friendly staff - what more could you ask for?

Been a few times food was fine in the past but last time fish was rockhard( £10) black pudding undercooked young staff are nice but owners are not friendly and should look for work they like and its not wheelchair friendly

Easy to miss as you drive through but if you take the time to seek this place out you will be very happy.Good food at reasonable prices served by very pleasant staff and then home made ice cream to finish.Definitely one that will keep me coming back for more.

Very poor service, we called in at 19:15 on Thursday night and tried to order fish but was unfortunately refused due to the time. The closing time stated on the door was 20:00. We checked the time prior to walking to the local Inn and made sure we had left plenty of time. Perhaps if the proprietor should have advertised a last time to order items that needed cooking so customers could be warned. We have visited this establishment over successive years but won't come back again.

Just stopped at this lovely cafe for our lunch today. Friendly staff and fast service. Very tasty fish and chips, best I've had this week whilst been on holiday.Definately recommend going.
