This place should be renamed as it's so much more than just a fossil museum. The World War history with the floor map of Scapa Flow showing the WW1 scuttling of the German fleet, and WW2 the route taken by UB40 which sunk Royal Oak, and the model of the 3rd barrier, really brought home and made easy to understand and put into perspective everything that happened in Orkney.I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the Argyllshire from the model ship, which went aground near my home in Holm. The ballast stones of which were used in the building of the pier at Ness point.Maureen at the desk was very welcoming, and good humour regarding going in the dark room with white trousers.

Really interesting and very informative heritage centre and museum. I preferred this to the Orkney museum in Kirkwall. Lots of geology, earth science and natural fossil history. Incredible floor map of Scapa Flow with details of Churchill Barriers and WW1/WW2 naval history. Cafe closed at the moment but don't miss this place!

Some cracking exhibits and more than just fossils, has a good part on the ww1 and ww2 era as well as local history.

2nd trip to actually buy some fossils! First trip spent with all the exhibits on geology, fossils, and a fab local heritage exhibition. Staff could not be nicer helpful, informative and 1 lady went above and beyond getting stock from the storeroom when she realised my husband was seriously interested in the fish fossils found locally. He left the shop much lighter in the pocket!

We had a lovely time here. Fossils were fabulous. Surprisingly engaging exhibition about the Scapa Flow incident in WW2 leading to the building of the Churchill Barriers. Made visit to Italian church and Hoxa head more interesting.

Cool wee museum where we spent an hour wandering around. Pity the cafe is shut (like most places in Orkney they're struggling to find staff) but the lassie behind the counter was great with our kids (again like everywhere in Orkney)

This was brilliant! An absolute gem of a place. Great for a few wet hours! Packed full of well displayed and fascinating stuff! The Scapa display was so informative, the fossils were clearly explained, the world war sections intriguing and poignant, the archive room a joy to explore, and there’s more. Best museum I’ve been to and I’d go back again and again.

Absolutely fabulous little find! Should be on every traveler's to-visit place. A huge collection of fascinating fossils from Orkney and other places. So much knowledge, history, archaeology, science and curios in a single place. The hidden gem - the glow room! UV light illuminates to showcase the natural fluorescence of stones and gems. Mind blowing!Do visit, you will not regret!PS. Shop has loads of cute stuff too!

Quirky little museum, one floor of local fossils with information about Orkney geology and geological timescale. Very informative. The fossil exhibit is not overly expansive, which is a good thing as it’s easy to overload on number of exhibits. I think the real gem is the first floor exhibit of Orkney “things” from WW 1 to WW2, island life, curiosities, all neatly arranged and described. An extra archive room let’s you poke around in old documents, books and maps. Friendly staff.
