In 2004 I arrived at RBH unable to see out of my right eye. I had already had cataract treatment on both eyes, laser treatment on the lens sacs and glaucoma. A junior doctor diagnosed a detached retina and fortunately I was directed to the young consultant, Mr Tanner. This was to be a tricky operation, to laser the retina back on behind a lens only held in place at the edges, and then to get the retina to stay on while it healed, pushed on by a gas bubble. Mr Tanner stated that his priority was to save the retina because he was confident that he could rebuild the eye should that become necessary. Mr Tanner saved my eye to give me excellent vision. In 2007 my left retina became detached and I returned to Mr Tanner. After surgery I again achieved excellent vision.Ever since I have had A1 vision in both eyes and my quality of life has not been affected. Were it not for Mr Tanner I would probably be partially sited.I have complete confidence in Mr Tanner and still have annual check ups.

Mr Tanner has carried out cataract surgery on both my eyes, one of which wasn't particularly straightforward, and I am delighted with the outcome and also the process. He emanates a calm reassurance and confidence, patiently answered all my questions, and I felt totally comfortable about the whole thing. His team are both friendly and professional. They were easy to get hold of and there were no delays. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mr Tanner to anyone needing ophthalmic surgery.

I, Mary Kingston, have had a very positive experience with Mr Tanner, and would unreservedly recommend treatment with him and his team. I suffered from extremely distressing floaters in both my eyes which were very irritating and made reading and writing, and many other activities, very difficult. I had two operations with Mr Tanner to clear these out, followed by two further procedures for cataracts. These have all been completely successful and have made a difference which is life changing. I am overjoyed at being able to see properly again and once more live my life to the full.Mr Tanner and his team are extremely professional, competent and reassuring, and I had complete confidence in their work. His admin team likewise have been excellent, responding very quickly to my queries and helping me through the system with care and consideration.I had to travel three hours each way to get to Reading and the fact I made this journey several times to undergo the assessments, operations, and follow ups is testament to the faith I had in them all!I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Tanner and all his team.

It's been a journey...but there IS a happy ending...It started in January, 2022, when, to my absolute horror (not to say total and abject terror...) I developed a detached retina.I had had little in the way of the DR symptoms, which - being pretty myopic - I'd carefully genned up on. Where was the black curtain? Where the drifting storm of smoke-smuts? All I'd had were what looked like tiny midges flying about which I kept batting away at fruitlessly. Thank goodness, my optician - bless him! - suspected there was more here than swarming insects and so he referred me to Mr Tanner. I was so confident that all was well. It was a massive shock to be told the hideous event that had occurred, so sneakily, under my eyelids. However, Mr Tanner was so calm and professional that , although I remained scared (he is, after all, a surgeon, not a magician), I was able to face the necessary intervention with a measure of grateful resolve. This was because I knew that, however anxious I was, I had, in fact, been mercifully lucky to a) have had the detachment spotted and b) to have it operated on so quickly - and both of the above by someone so able. But there was more stress to come: over the following months, the duet of vitrectomy and gas bubble decided to gang up on me and produce a deeply unwelcome cataract.Again, I was in denial. Surely the only reason I couldn't see was because the light was dim? Or I was tired? Or my contact lenses needed tweaking? No - that was all codswallop. I had a cataract. The deed was done in September, 2022. I had a Vivity lens implanted. It was painless, quick and easy and I had , so far as I could tell, no recovery-time horrors of any kind. And WOW...OMG...It's fantastic. I cannot believe how well I can see. I've never, not even as a child, had vision as amazing as this. My son - rather cruelly - calls it my cyborg eye. Whatever. I can see better than him. Or my husband. Or anyone else I know. I know it's not a competition but I'm revelling in , for the first time ever, at least being one of the competitors in the vision stakes.Because, now, as in the words of Roger Daltry: There's magic in my eyes ... I can see for miles and miles and miles"Have no fear

Being a regular customer of an ophthalmic surgeon could be a dubious accolade but I can assure you that I more than happy with Mr Tanner’s skill and care. My first exposure to him was back in 2002 when he successfully saved a detached retina in my left eye. Twenty years on I was back again, this time with the lens from previous cataract surgery having slipped and needing replacement due to insufficient capsular support. This involved vitrectomy surgery and insertion of a sclerally supportive Carlevale lens implant. Despite my impatience, and a recovery period far longer than cataract surgery, I am delighted with the final outcome and a very satisfied patient. If I ever had the misfortune to have any new problems in the future I know where I will be heading!
