Lack of respect from the maths department specifically. Asked for extra support in my final year (during the college day) was told to ask another teacher as mine “doesn’t tutor their own pupils” and was then told I’d have to pay for it. Found out a month or so later another student in my class was receiving extra lessons from our teacher. Both of us were predicted B’s, other student received an A and I got a D.I feel that this college cost myself and several of my friends, who were also considered high achievers through primary and secondary school, places at Russell Group universities. My maths teacher also insisted we email her if we were stuck on questions, refused to answer on her days off (part time) and when answered received “look in the study guide”.Despite attending an extra study session every week for the first year, when it came to applying for university I was told I would have to “show I could put the effort in” to receive an improved predicted grade to secure a place.Ultimately spent 90% of my time trying to reteach myself the maths syllabus in my final year, sacrificed revision and coursework time for my other subjects (English and Art) to try and improve my grade and still received no support or encouragement from maths dept.No other subject showed nearly as much blatant disrespect for students as maths did. We were told by a maths teacher it was not appropriate for us to work part time whilst at college and felt we were shamed for having to earn money ourselves. We were also made to feel guilty for having a social life, eating food outside of college grounds and having other appointments (driving test, doctors appointments etc) as this took away from study time. The passive aggressive nature of this department ultimately put many students I knew off of progressing maths to higher education. After results day, I received an email from a maths teacher saying how I’d been only 1 mark from the next grade up and was asked if I wanted to have the exam remarked. Due to communication issues I didn’t see the email for several weeks. However, when I did respond, I revived no response from the college and haven’t to this day.The only upsides to this college I felt were the quality of teaching in the other subjects I studied. The art and English departments were outstanding in teaching, and I received As and A*s in coursework and on results day. It’s a shame the maths department ultimately cost me a place at any Russell group university through favouring those who came from private schools, had instant high grades upon joining the college and were instantly favoured by the maths teacher.

this truly has to be one of the schools so far. the headmaster did a job running the place and the education was in the school. the school has lessons and the food was cooked. the teachers taught the students and the TA's were there. the lessons also happened. this school really is one of the schools of all time, if not the last decade.

As a Muslim student I studied here 1999-2001 (A levels) and had an excellent time here socially and made it into Manchester University which was hard to get into. The staff were supportive and the free time for doing private study was beneficial. The college was large (at that time around 1000 students) and I made many new friends whom I still had contact with after leaving the college. The RE lessons and tutorials were also interesting and was very welcoming. I would highly recommend the college if you are willing to study hard outside of lesson time. Although the college results were similar to the national average at the time it is not due to poor teaching. The college is situated in a good location and there are plenty of activities to participate in. I have many pleasant memories.

Screw this college, they were not willing to give me a place even though I met the entry requirements and were accepting people who didn’t even meet the requirements. Truly disappointed

Maths is very poorly taught. Simply a teacher sitting reading from a textbook. No care or support offered. Exceptionally poor teaching from Computer science - teacher doesn’t even understand the content! Would not suggest Xaverian if you are wanting to do maths or computer science.

Awful college did not offer any support for when I was stuck on things. Slow to respond to my needs and resulting in me leaving only for them to take nearly short of a year to even notice I had left

Fairly good Roman Catholic college rated Outstanding by Ofsted. No major issues with teaching and staff, but there is a little bit of a general lack of respect towards the pupils. This college has lots of opportunities and good university destinations for students. They even teach some Foundation Year courses on behalf of the University of Manchester.

I used to attend here and I found it a very cliquey college. The hipsters keep to themselves, the asian community does and black community too. I didn't like the way you were treated as if you were still a child at school as well. The Arts Department was unorganised as was the graphics one. Not enough room either, needs to be expanded. Not a brush or pencil to be found in either departments. I remember doing Maths and that Mr Patel, very patronising teacher. The way some of the teachers spoke to you was vile. Felt like I was back in school again which I could not wait to leave. Also witnessed teachers cussing at one another too and a few art teachers blazing up a joint outside the gates in the bushes as if we didn't see them. And that IT teacher Mrs Ahmed was terrible, never taught a single thing. It was also a very cold college, food wasn't good either at the canteen. Unless you fit in the crowd or friendly friendly with the tutors you were basically just left out in my book.
